Blow the Dust out . . .
« on: July 20, 2011, 09:55:46 AM »
Summer is in full swing for most of us, and the weather is hot.  I want to remind everyone to BLOW THE DUST OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER CASE!!!  I did mine last week, and now my computer runs at 10 degrees celsius lower temp, for both the CPU and video card.

OOOKKK,
been meaning to ask this question going neigh unto 5 years now and keep forgetting.
How do you know what temps your GPU / CPU are running?  I'm pretty sure it ain't the touch it and see if it burns your finger kinda thing.  As far as I know there isn't any themometer in the case, at least I can't fine any glass tube filled with red murcury anywhere??

Your motherboard and components should have temperature sensors on them.  There are programs that read those sensors and show you on a graphical interface, right there on your screen.  I have a fan controller program that I use for my graphics card.  It's called Sapphire Trixx, and it tells the temp.  I think CPUID tells the temp of you're CPU.  I have an LCD readout on my motherboard for my CPU temp.  I am running at @23 celcius at rest, and 38-42 under load.

I wanted to speak about the POWER SUPPLY.  It draws dust into it constantly.  Overheating of the PS due to dust is a major killer.  Clean it out thoroughly and often.  And mount it low in the case, with access to fresh, cool air.

:o  It doesn't matter what your temperatures are!  (I rarely ever look at my temps.  ;) )

;)     Clean your PC regularly to avoid buildup of dust.  Dust restricts airflow and insulates cooling fins and radiators, making them useless.  The fans draw dust into the case like a vacuum cleaner.  Depending on where you live dust can build up quickly, and silently, in the nooks and crannies of your computer.   :-[

I agree that dust build up is always a consideration however I continually read posts citing temps and thought there must be some utility that registers them just never knew for sure now I'm as smart as the average bear!  ::)

Checked out the link in Steve's post but see that it wants to install 8 other programs as well.  I'll forego the pleasure of opting out of all that garbage and just use the hand on the computer to see if it is hot method.

Spud,
Yep. Looks like some dirty rotten you-know-what's have hijacked the Core Temp utility available in some quarters and added their crap to it. If you're still interested, try this link. It comes up clean for me.

Deleted my post with the link to the malware CoreTemp utility. The link I reference in my post above is clean.

 :o     Boy, ... it's been a while since I've done this announcement.    :o

Sorry.   :-[  I hope everyone has been good about blowing out their computers.  As the temps outside rise, so does the temps inside our computers.   ::)

So, ...   P L E A S E   turn the thing off for a few minutes and clean it out.
Remember the power supply too.  ;)

     Thank you!   :-*

     Hi everyone,
It's Autumn (for me anyway), and the dust is giving way to rain.  It is a good time to clean the dust out of your case fans and graphics cards, etc.  Make sure you have plenty of cool, clean airflow for the winter months ahead.  Cool!   8)
