Cigar Box Says "Flight Never Landed" After Landing
« on: May 31, 2021, 02:25:54 AM »
Flight from S20 to OG20 this morning went well, but winds required landing on runway 25, which made for a long taxi in, taxiing back on 07/25 to the intersection of RWY 16/34, then to the hangars at the south end of the field, which may have confused CB. End result was that I couldn't file a PIREP for the flight.

Here's my Flight Log:

Hmm... after you landed at 07:10 you had another take off, but with all parameters at zero. Strange thing...

Yes. Weird!

Also, I never noticed this before, but the TAS was 43, GS 42 (makes sense with the winds at 1 knot almost straight down the runway), but 33 KIAS? I wonder if FS2020 models the airspeed indicator reading low at high AOA.

Yes all zero... must have lifted off enough to skim over the runway and taxiway whereas Cigar box interpreted as a takeoff.

Now here is the thing. Over time we hav learned that after a takeoff, Cigar Box needs the aircraft to reach 1000' AGL to be able to recognize the next landing. (Sometimes will capture at  @ 800 agl with a couple of mins being airborne) but if you use that 1000' AGL, all the in landings in a flight will all be captured).

In your pirep, after your bounce or slight lift takeoff, suspect that it was interpreted that you took off, so cigar box has you positioned in the air...  but if not reaching the 1000' agl, it did not set the trigger to capture a landing: so that is interpreted as you are still in the air: hence when you tried to end the flight you received "Flight Never Landed".

So a big bounce of wind lifting your plane off the runway, or another example might be: if you do a touch n go somewhere like a practice touch, takeoff and and go around in a pattern to land at that same location again but stay at 250 agl to go around and land again cigar box may not trigger the landing.

Does that make sense?

Norm,

That makes sense, but the plane didn't bounce. Note that at 7:14, the engine was stopped. The "takeoff" in the log occurs at 7:16, when the parking brakes were set, the engine was off, and the plane wasn't moving. Winds were 1 knot, so not enough to lift the plane off the ground.

One thing that I noticed is that CB didn't record the Engine starting. I don't know why unless you really didn't stop the engine, in that case, CB recorded you did.  One thing in addition to Norms comments is that I always reload CB after each flight.  Further, it is always a good idea to keep an eye on CV to make sure it is in fact, recording. We created the warning that you are moving and not recording, but that only works if you have the program open where you can see it on a separate monitor. (A good Idea) I wish we had the source code as CB is no longer supported and we can't do much about it at this point.

Hi Henry,

Engine start is there at 6:09. I started CB after starting FS2020, and started the recording right after CB was finished connecting. I then started my preflight...you can see me cycling the flaps and checking the parking brake is set at 6:08, then switching on the strobes before the engine start.

I did forget to stop the flight until after I went back to the main menu in FS2020, and that may have something to do with it.

Also, for some reason, pulling the mixture to cutoff didn't kick me to the usual end of flight interruption menu, and neither did switching off the Master Switch.

One thing we all have to remember about CB is that it was created for FSX and then upgraded to P3D.  But development stopped before MSFS was even announced as a new sim and, as you may remember, didn't work with MSFS until the sim connect issue was resolved.  It is entirely possible that some, and perhaps many commands from MSFS will not be recognized.  Typically in cases like this, there is one thing you did that is different from "normal".  Although there is little we can do to fix any issue in CB, we can document things and in some cases recommend a work around.  Like always restarting CB before a second flight or third or fourth flight.  Always make sure that both check marks are there before doing anything, and keeping the window open all help....both from a notification side and a performance side.  If you can re create the issue, that would be even better.  For me, I have not ever had a problem.  Yes, it will say the Pirep isn't filed (it is) or that it has timed out (it hasn't) but that's it. You might start out by starting the sim and once at the main page, start CB and verify all is well, then load your flight into CB and then create your departure and arrival airports.  I can't speak to the issues with loading flight plans as I don't use them.....I like to create my own and rarely are flight plans created by others, useful unless you just want to fly the line to see what ever you are looking for.  So, loading PLN into MSFS might have an issue with CB but I don't really think it will.  That's about it.
