Intel vs AMD
« on: September 22, 2020, 11:27:42 AM »
Looking to the 'Future' and since I'll be in Pandemic Hibernation; I'm thinking of building a new PC for FS over the winter.  I have been researching all the latest components.  Lots of options out there since AMD has improved over the last couple of years.   I thought I'd see if anyone here has done a recent 'Build' for F.S. that works really well for them and is willing to share their knowledge.  I'm currently running P3Dv4 on an Intel I5 with a GTX970 setup. Time to up-grade before it 'Crashes'.

Thanks / Rick

Over the winter. That's perfect. AMD will introduce Zen 3 in October. Prices will probably drop then for Zen 2 CPUs.

And, also in October, AMD will be showing their new GPUs!.

Thanks Carl

Sounds like you're suggesting AMD as the way to go.  That's the way I'm 'leaning' right now, but will be looking for prices on last years stuff to come down in price when their New stuff comes out.  Ryzen 7 3700X is at the top of my list right now, but it's a work in progress.

If anyone is running that CPU; I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks in advance !

I'm an Intel guy. Or, I was until now. I see that AMDs CPUs are almost catching up with single core performance.

And single core performance will get less important over time. Various tests suggest that Intel is still the king with most of the games, but this will flatten out.

If you're not chasing for an absolute high end gaming computer monster then it doesn't matter if you use Intel or AMD. And AMD right now might be more affordable.

Still a different thing with GPUs, though. Let's wait for those new AMD cards.

That first one- the mb blew up!!

I have always used AMD.  I am running the Ryzen 7, and it works great for me.  I keep it cool with a Coolermaster radiator.  My chip is a few years old now though.  Still great!   ;)

I built my new flightsim-PC four weeks ago.

My last two PC‘s were Intel.
For the new Build I was thinking of AMD.
Finally I chose Intel again......
I‘m flightsimming exclusivly in VR.

Ahh, Klaus, I see it's a 10900K. Very nice. That one has a 4,9 all core turbo. You can even OC it to 5,0 with air cooling.

Yes, it is really fast.....but hard to get one.
I‘m running it with a NZXT X73 Kraken AIO watercooling....But haven‘t overclocked yet.

I can run P3dV5 in VR with the cpu dominated sliders maxed out......

Yes, it's a great CPU.

Using VR, once you have your 30?0, will the sim be more Cpu- or Gpu bound?

.....Good question....if the 3000‘s are as good as promised, the CPU will then be the bottleneck ;D

But that's good, you could route the pipes of your water cooling through your fridge and oc to 5.5

I read Dome reports that temeratures are critical on the 3080. The 3090 should be better in this case....
