Vertical Wakes
« on: November 28, 2019, 08:04:17 AM »
Hello
I am seeing a vertical wake from Coastguard vessel 245 that patrols Ketchikan Harbor and the Narrows.
I've tried 'remming out' the tempk entries in the coastguard wake fx file but no joy.

Also I see a vertical wake from the un-named vessel at N55 23.27 W13144.67 Time: 2223Z [see pics]

Could someone tell me which software adds these vessels to RTMM and/or where I can find the cfg file for each, please, so I can track down the relevant wake fx file.

I have installed RTMM AI Shipping & Henrik's vessels & v1.15 PAKT.

Thank you.

I'm not a P3D user, but this issue has been addressed many, many times in the past. Do a search using the search tool for "vertical wake" and you'll probably find your fix.

Should be an easy fix:

1. identify which vessel has the verticle wake: (the name should be on the vessel). Fly by it and record the name.
2. Find the simobject/boat corresponding to the name of the vessel.
3. Open the sim.cfg file of that vessel (notepad), to establish which wake effect is being used.
 >> Scroll down in the sim.cfg file to:
   [Effects]
Wake = "fx_wake_xxxxxxxxxxxxxx"   (extention .fx is inferred)
4. Go to your Effects folder and find the correct fx wakexxx .fx file.
5. Open the effect file (Notepad)

For sections:
[Particle.0]  [Particle.1] and [Particle.2] inside the wake .fx file    Line:  Ground Decal=1  has to be added

ie:

[Particle.0]
Lifetime=30.07, 30.07
Type=21
X Scale=50.50, 50.50
Y Scale=50.50, 50.50
Z Scale=0.00, 0.00
X Scale Rate=0.04, 0.04
Y Scale Rate=0.04, 0.04
Z Scale Rate=0.00, 0.00
Drag=0.00, 0.00
Color Rate=0.11, 0.11
Fade In=0.10, 0.10
Fade Out=0.80, 0.80
Ground Normal=1
Ground Decal=1    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<  (Add)
Shade=1
Face=1, 0, 1

[Particle.1]
Lifetime=20.07, 20.07
Type=21
X Scale=50.50, 50.50
Y Scale=50.50, 50.50
Z Scale=0.00, 0.00
X Scale Rate=0.15, 0.15
Y Scale Rate=0.15, 0.15
Z Scale Rate=0.00, 0.00
Drag=0.00, 0.00
Color Rate=0.00, 0.00
Fade In=0.05, 0.05
Fade Out=0.60, 0.60
Ground Normal=1
Ground Decal=1    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<  (Add)
Shade=1
Face=1, 0, 1

[Particle.2]
Lifetime=50.00, 50.00
Type=21
X Scale=65.00, 70.00
Y Scale=65.00, 70.00
Z Scale=0.00, 0.00
X Scale Rate=0.05, 0.06
Y Scale Rate=0.05, 0.06
Z Scale Rate=0.00, 0.00
Drag=0.00, 0.00
Color Rate=0.11, 0.11
X Offset=0.00, 0.00
Y Offset=0.00, 0.00
Z Offset=0.00, 0.00
Fade In=0.05, 0.05
Fade Out=0.50, 0.50
Ground Normal=1
Ground Decal=1    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<  (Add)
Shade=1
Face=1, 0, 1

Save/close. DONE.

Now, saying all the above.. that's how.  The theory behind it, from my understanding is: the line "Ground Decal=1" forces the wake to run horizontal - across the ground (or water) and not verticle into the air.

------------------
Now the much faster fix:

There is a small app to do all the wakes which was made originally for P3Dv3 but also works in P3Dv4x without issue.

The exe has to be run directly inside your effects folder with DOS command navigating to your effects folder(s) and executing the wake fix via DOS two commands). One to Scan first and the second to apply fixes to the wake files.

(Easy to use once you know how and it fixes every wake file - and only touch the wakes files. A very small and a very handy little tool).

The zip File to fix the wakes is attached to this post: (Simply unzip, copy the exe to your effects folder(s) and follow the instructions). DONE

Thanks Steve and Norm.

Yes, I am aware this issue is an old chestnut and a few years ago I read the remedy was to 'rem out' certain tempk and temprate values - 109 and 0.01 respectively.

My procedure to do this is correction is exactly as Norm has outlined - obviously, what is crucial is identifying the vessel displaying the vertical wake. I posted because, as I stated, I could not ID the 2 vessels which means I can't find the cfg files to ID the wave effect.

Norm's advice re adding the ground decal line is new to me. I ran the utility Norm provided and that went well, but vertical wakes persisted.

Scratch head....It then struck me that I had not reviewed the wave effect files in the RTMM scenery packages, all of which I have added via the xml method!!!  :-[ :-[

So I had copies of various wake fx files that had not been changed and copies that had been changed. I identified all wave fx files added via the xml method last night, made the tempk and temprate changes, added the ground decal line and all seems to be good now.

Thanks again for your help guys. Another learning point for me to add to my checklist re the xml method. ::)

That little utility for to fix wakes.. you can put it in any folder where you have effects. and run it via command prompt.. and it will fix the wake effects in that folder.

(So any folder you have effects.. it will fix if you copy/run it in that folder).  (And it only touches the needed "wake" files that need the fix).

Norm, do you know if it will work in FSX SE?

Made for p3d since p3d handles the wake files different than fsx boxed or steam.

Shouldn't even need the fix in fsx.

There is no "decal" parameter in FSX effects xml files.

Norm - if the util is used does it remain necessary to rem out/delete the tempk and temprate entries?
Thanks

Once you use it.. (It's just prog scan then prog apply and it's done. It has fixed the wake effect files.

Nothing else should be needed. (I just leave the small exe in my effects folder so it's handy if needed again (If I add more boats/ships that would have a wake effect).   Nothing else is needed so you can del the temp stuff.

Thanks Norm-doing a clean new install of P3Dv 4.5 Hotfix2
The contrails appears again and the “coastguard wake fix did not work completely
Not tech enough to run your DOS program
But Ground Decal did the job on the one ship affected
Thanks again

Wakes ... again!

I've got a vertical wake on the Veh_Norwegian Sun and the Veh_Norwegian Star ... but now the "funny" part (as in strange).  when I search my simobjects and P3D V5 , I have neither of these showing up in the search. I search my entire "S" drive (where I have all scenry and sims) and they don't show there either. Where the heck could they be?

Check your default add-ons\Prepar3D v4\5 folder and as well your SODE/Simobjects folder..(C:\ProgramData\12bPilot\SODE\SimObjects)

OK, found it as a texture under VEH_Princess ... the "sun" was in there. But what tipped me off, the wake for the Princess was the Coastguard Wake. I went to effects and fixed that and it worked for the Sun and the Norwegian Jade, which is also "hiding" somewhere.  Got it working, thank you Norm.
