Sounds like your terrain.cfg file. is corrupted. Try a system rollback, if possible. I'm sure others will chime in with other possible solutions.

Is it not funny that you have no water because of a bad pool header?   ;D ;D ;D

The bad pool header refers to a problem related to being unable to roll his system back, not the terrain.cfg. problem.

Sorry, I was just being funny.  Bad pool header does not cause water to not show in the sim.  I know that.   ::)

I misinterpreted "funny" as being odd, not "ha-ha" funny. My mistake! Should have read your post a couple of times before I posted. DUH on my part.

Nice to inject a bit of humour into it Jeff thanks,

The good news is I have repaired the install and all is now working.
I reinstalled the nvidia drivers as per the bad pool header problem but this did not solve the problem. Then removed and reinstalled the orbx files still no go so indesperation got out my old back up drive and found after much searching a 3 month old terrain .cfg file replace the origional and again reinstalled orb x and all is now well. I also ran sfc /scannow to check the ms 10 file integrity.

Thanks ualini you were proved correct .

Also

jsapai for the url [why I removed and reinstalled an older version of  the nvidia drivers]

A real pain to reinstall the things you had to, but glad it fixed your problem. A good example in why making regular backups is important and a lifesaver in times of panic. (Been there, done that when my water disappeared for no reason once!)

Also a good example of why to not update your NVIDIA drivers unless the update pertains specifically to your setup, like gaming. Learned that the hard way myself.
