New computer: Ryzen 5 + RX 580?
« on: October 06, 2018, 07:07:26 AM »
Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a new computer and I'd be delighted to hear your opinions.

Budget needs to be kept "wife-friendly" which in my case means USD 900 (it's actually 1150 but here in Europe electronics is more expensive than in the USA so 850-900 is a better baseline). Further upgrades like more RAM or another HDD are planned.

My typical mission is flying around ORBX SAK + Misty Moorings scenery or DCS Gazelle (low and slow flying helicopter) - these are the missions I would like to optimize for. For flying PMDG or Q400 I don't really care  whether I have 60 or 24 fps.

I'd like to have REX clouds, very dense scenery, detailed clouds, dynamic lighting, volumetric fog and 30fps stable at 1920x1080 resolution. HDR lighting, some autogen, water reflections and shadows would be a nice bonus.

CPU:        AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (6 core with hyper threading, 3.4-3.9GHz)
GPU:        Sapphire Radeon Nitro+ Rx580 8GB
Hard drive: ADATA XPG SX8200 M.2 NVMe 480GB
MB:         Gigabyte B450 AORUS Pro
Memory:     2x8GB ADATA XPG GAMMIX D10 (2666 MHz CL 16 Non-ECC)
PSU:        Corsair TX650M (650W, 80+ Gold)

I plan to add another at least 16GB of RAM and 1TB HDD in the future.

I saw couple of benchmarks and the Ryzen 5 CPU was on par with i5-8600 which cost twice as much (at least here). I wonder if it's worth the extra cost. Same thing with the GPU - Rx580 is roughly on par with GeForce 1060 in benchmarks and the cost is the same but has 8GB of VRAM while the NVidia has 6GB.

What are your opinions on this, please?

Thanks!

Hi Emko,
This sounds similar to my system.  If so, it should do everything you need it to.  Let us know what you settle on, and how it works for you.   8)

Ummm ... 480Gb HDD???  That will be a tight squeeze, I think.  Even the 1T is bare minimum, imo. (just for the sim)   :o

For operating system and sim, unless you plan on no addons, no way. My OS drive is a 1TB ssd with 600 gb free space. Flight sim ssd is 1 TB with 400 gb free space

I agree with Jeff and Steve, a 480 GB HDD is woefully inadequate. HDD's are dirt cheap now. Everything else looks good. In fact, adding another 16 Gig of RAM is just overkill. 16 is plenty.

I'd get the biggest SSD you can afford, partition it, and run your OS and sim on it. The performance difference compared to an HDD is incredible and well worth the cost. Use your HDD's for other programs and storage.

Well, actually he was going for an M2 drive, which is incredibly fast.  But not big enough, sadly.   :'(

Ah. Never even heard of an M2 drive. Ya' learn something new every day. Or in my case, ya' forget something new every day. :o

Yep hi every body

SSD or M2 for the OS  250Giga is very very sufficiant

HDD for big capacity  2,or3,or 4 Terra  that OK for scenery & isn't expansive today

The sim on SSD 500 giga that right ....

Thanks for replies!

The M.2 SSD can be much faster than a SATA SSD if it adheres to the NVMe specification. Without it (just M.2) it's as fast as the SATA SSDs. I opted for it because of its speed - I won't use the computer only for gaming and I will make use of it. I also plan to add more disk space (1-2TB SATA SSD) and more RAM later. When I get more space I'll move games there and leave this just for system, swap, programs and work.

I bought it couple of days ago, still didn't have a time tune the P3D for it properly. With very dense scenery and normal autogen (low draw distance) the CPU was the bottleneck (what a surprise :-) ) and over Wasilla area I was getting around 26 fps - this was the worst one. The rest of RTMM was 40-60fps (while 60 being the vsync cap).  So a CPU overclock is a must but the stock cooler wouldn't allow much. I'll put more money into it, probably during January. DCS World with medium details can be reliably at 60fps everywhere and GTA V on max settings has some drops during scenes with a lot of lighting and shadows. GPU is the bottleneck there, CPU is fine.

The only change I made to the posted specs was faster RAM - 3200MHz CL16. I learnt that the Ryzen CPUs internally depend on memory clock speed.

What are your settings and fps, jeff3163?

I've got my frames locked at 30, and it usually stays there.  Sometimes dips to mid 20's.  For multiplayer/acars flights I use mostly medium settings throughout, but for solo or screenshots I crank everything to max (except mesh at 5m).  No dynamic 3d vegetation, ever.  I run in 5760x1080 fullscreen resolution on three 42" LED monitors.   ;)

I am using a ROG Crosshair VI Extreme motherboard to run my AMD Ryzen 7 CPU (and 1080 Ti), but not enough room in my sig block to add that info.   :o  For CPU cooling, I use a Corsair H110i liquid cooler.  I've also got fans that clip onto my RAM chips.  They are cool.   8)
