PF27 Telkwa / Approach and landing
« on: September 08, 2018, 08:41:09 PM »
I-ve been flying the MFC0005 Barnstormers tour, so first a big thank you guys for setting these tours. MFC0005 in particular is really nice.

Re: PF27 Telkwa. I've spent a fair number of attempts on landing leg 13 on Telkwa but I've found it quite challenging… I wonder if any has got any hints on how to best approach it and land safely.

I've been flying a Beaver (Milviz Tundra config) and tried to land it heading 110° at about 70 mph close to ground, but still the field looks quite short, not counting the slope…

Any hints would be much appreciated.

Thanks Blue!..(MFC pilot MFC0006 I take it?).

Previous RTMM scenery designer (Xavier Carre) built the Telkwa PF27 scenery piece - it's not a smooth one but hilly and a sandy/grass strip. It's been a while since have been to Telkwa Mountain Lodge Airstrip (PF27) in the Barnstormers tour leg 13, but gave it another run as a single flight (# MFCT00049-6A0) in an effort to confirm a reasonable approach using a DHC2 Beaver Tundra.

Ok I think easiest approach is landing from the north end to south. This is the high side of the runway or dirt strip. Went to Flaps 6 and touched down at 64knots and immediate braking on touchdown: Had room to  stop plenty short of the end of runway. A bit of a bumpy ride but went ok.

I also tried the south to north approach but landing on this the low side of the runway is much bumpier and harderto controll/reduce the speed of the aircraft after touchdown. I landed at Flaps 4: at 68 knots on a slight uphill and immediate braking upon touchdown but due to the bumpier conditions of the runway braking was not as effective. Still stopped short of the end of runway but not by much- (stopped just over one airplane length away from the blocks Pic attached).

We should be able to get the DHC2 down to 53/54 knots or even a tad lower with more degrees of flaps and still keep the aircraft above stall speed at touchdown.

Hope this helps.

Norm

Maybe there are others out there who could share their trip to PF27?

Wow!  There's a hump in the middle of the runway.  After several failed attempts, I finally came in 110 approach @60 knots, full flaps and low elevation to bleed off speed.  Pretty much stalling it onto the airstrip.  Still rolled out the entire length before stopping.  Brakes aren't very good at all.  Also, flaps up at touchdown to get down faster.   ::)

I haven't tried coming in the other way yet.   ???

... and now I have.  Yes, that approach is much better.  Tricky getting in there, but the surface is better.   ;)

Thank you Norm and Jeff.
I was finally able to land (and survive!)… Though not a particular landing I'd feel proud of...  ::)
It was a challenging landing and I was able to stop only off the field and a bit into the hill  :o . It would have been a nice landing if the braked had helped a bit more.

Anyway, I made it.

Quite a enjoyable experience! Thank you guys

Yep, I ended up there also.  Twice.  Try coming in the other way, and touch down in that turn-around circle.  The little uphill approach will help slow you down before the bump in the middle of the runway.   ;)

It's not really a bump, but more of a tabletop, and slope.  Coming in from the 110* heading is level, but drops off halfway down the strip.  Coming the other way uses the slope, coming up onto the flat part last.  So, there you go.  Landing on the sloped end is the answer.  (like Norm said)  8)

Thanks Jeff. I tried it as both suggested now and was able to do a proper landing.

Cool  8)

Thanks for asking.  This has been fun checking this airstrip out.  Thanks for sharing your cockpit setup too.  Nice.  8)
