Motherboard Failure :(
« on: March 21, 2018, 01:20:17 AM »
     On Sunday my motherboard lost it's bootloader image, and that caused a black bios screen and my system's OS boot record disappeared.  This was sudden and unexpected, during a routine rebooting.  I've had to go back to my previous motherboard, an AM3 type.  I was forced to reinstall windows, and am now in the process of brain-salad surgery getting things functional again.  People, WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORDS SOMEWHERE, and REMEMBER WHERE YOU PUT THEM!!!  I was not prepared with passwords or windows key etc., so had to hack my way in with a dull spoon.   :'(   Anyway, I am obviously logged into my account now, so yay for that.  Computer is barely functional, as I am still stitching things up.  I have no sound or microphone, so not much fun yet.

Win10Pro64, MSFS 1.25.9.0, P3Dv4.3.29.25520, AMD Ryzen7 1800X@3.6 GHz , 32Gb RAM, GTX 1080 Ti, 2x42" Vizio Monitors, HTC Vive VR HMD, Saitek Yoke/Pedals/trim wheel, XBox360 Controller, G27 steering wheel w/shifter+pedals. :P

Are you sure it was a board failure and not a HDD MBR failure, which can be repaired? Did you get an error message when it failed?

This is why I regularly create image backups of all of my important drives, as well as keep my passwords up to date on a spreadsheet, print them out and put in a safe place. Has saved my bacon many times by getting me back up and running in a few leisurely hours instead of a few hair ripping months. All it took was one catastrophe years ago and I learned my lesson the hard way.

Ditto for me.

Thanks Norm.   :)

     I need a new AM4 Motherboard for my Ryzen chip and 32Gb Corsair RAM to go in.
 (  ... and more thermal paste.   ::)  )

Anyone have a suggestion for a great Mobo?

I'm limping along with an MSI 890 FX-A GD70, I think it's called.   :P  It's AM3 architechure, and 4Gb of DDR3 RAM.

What a major PITA. I made a disk image after a major crash almost 2 years ago. Think I'll make another one. Lot of water under the bridge since then. Good luck, Jeff.

     I finally shut down the computer long enough to install my new motherboard yesterday after work.  It is a very nice MOBO, with its RGB lighting looking like a disco.  Just kidding, it's not that bad.  My only issue is that Windows won't re-activate or recognize my PC as a paying customer.   >:(  :o  I can see my purchased product in the Windows store, I know my product key, I am signed into my MS account as Admin.  But it shows no devices that can be activated on my system.  Having too much fun ... weeeeeee!

My wife's laptop needed to have the latest Win 10 security updates installed but wouldn't do it until the latest version of Win 10 was installed: the update of which failed like 3 times. What a pain. Apparently the Wi-Fi adapter was losing its ISP address. Fixed it through the Control Panel/ Internet Connection Troubleshooter, but at the outset there was no indication that pointed me to my internet connection as the culprit, until I saw that my WI-Fi had failed.  After a two day attempt at downloading the Update I think I'm there. Installation is now at 89% so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I love computers as much as getting diagnosed with some anti-biotic resistant disease.

     I am genuine again, after being forced to reacquire an activation key that I just purchased a year ago.  That is now $436 for Win10Pro, so far.  (and I hate Win10, btw )   :o :'(

     To be fair, I never attempted to contact a real person or press the issue with customer support.  I tried to get it to work from my side, and the easy fix was to throw more money at it.   ;)
