A quick rant, then I'll be all right...
« on: March 09, 2011, 02:44:47 AM »
I get the distinct impression that the people who develop software are all missing a chromosome or two and their DNA is more convoluted than a company manager's brain.

Why isn't there an easy way to paint a terrain polygon? My godfathers! All I want to do is to draw a long rectangle with a blended edge and drape it over my terrain. If I go outside my front door with a brush and some paint it's easy. But nooooo. To get a scenery built you need SBuilder, ADE, AFX, IS and any number of graphics programs.

AFX seems to come closest though... at least you can see what you are doing live in FSX...

...and the terminology that's used! Sheesh! Each program speaks a different language...I really need that "Eierlegende Wollmilchsau". That's one really useful German phrase that beats the English "all-singing, all-dancing" hands down. Literally it means "egg-laying woolly milk pig"

I have a 24" full HD monitor in front of me and the task bar across the bottom is FULL of active programmes and I still can't do exactly what  want to creat my scenery how I want it...

Oh well...

tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick

(There... isn't that better once it's off your chest?)

Rant mode on

Loud screams are coming from the Eagleskinner / One-Eye desk. My water has disappeared again in FSX and I can confirm that it was caused by installing Scenery Builder X

When you install SBuilder it greates a new terrain config and does something to FSX that removes all water. Maybe it's incompatible with PFJ or another scenery. I am confirming this as it is the second time it has happened - I wasn't sure the first time.

Maybe SBuilder isn't win7 - 64 bit compatible. Maybe it's just buggy. I will have to send them an owl. Give me a few seconds or minutes to build a picture or three. Last time this happened I had to use the system restore to get my water back...

More screams!

You can't just send a mail message to the makers - you need to register with the forum. And you can't just register, you need to write a reason why.

OK, I can understand some of that, but the simple answer is - if it don't work as advertised then throw it away and forget it. SBuilder is headed for the trash bin for now.

Getting your water back is easy enough, just run the FTX tool and swap to FSX and apply, then back the NA and apply, you may also need to run the repair function for Tongass as well, it's a bloody nuisance but it works.

easier...

Go to the FSX root directory, delete the SBuilder terrain.cfg and rename the "old" one to terrain.cfg

SBuilder creates one either with a default name or one of your own choosing

Hang on... you mean that if I do it that way, I can actually use SBuilder in FSX and STILL have my water in the PacFjords areas etc.?

Hi Chris:

Most opinions suggest accepting SBuilderX's new proposed Terrain.Cfg file, then re-running ALL "configurator" utilities that make changes to [FSX install path]\Terrain.Cfg BEFORE re-starting FSX.

Examples of packages that make changes to [FSX install path]\Terrain.Cfg

Scenery Solutions c/o Flight1:
Ultimate Terrain X USA
Ultimate Terrain X Canada
Ultimate Terrain X Alaska
Ultimate Terrain X Europe
(Misc. entries throughout Terrain.Cfg)

Unknown (SBuilderX ?)
(MegaScenery_Shorelines_Generic_Ocean entry)

Holger et al. Freeware:
Victoria Plus FSX

Holger et al. payware c/o FSAddon:
Vancouver Plus
Tongass Fjords

Holger et al. payware c/o OrbX:
FTX NA PNW
FTX NA PJF
FTX NA RMN

Aerosoft African Airstrip Adventures
("Serengeti" entries)

[EDITED]
It is possible Thorsten Reichert may make changes to Terrain.Cfg for other scenery packages released via Aerosoft over the last 2 years or so.

[END_EDIT

I'm not sure if Pacific Islands Simulations (ex: Pacific Islands Simulation-Extreme Bush Trekker) implements any changes to Terrain.Cfg, as I don't have it installed at this time.
