I placed the orange smoke in the effects folder and have the "med temp" in scenery library and still have black smoke.

Carl,
Are you seeing black smoke in the scenery tester?

Make double sure that you have the Medical Temp library properly activated in the scenery library.

Yes in the tester. Med Temp library activated and orange smoke is in the effects folder.

Carl,
Are you using FSX, FSXDX10, P3D? If P3D, what version?

Just a thought in interpretation of "black" smoke. Is the smoke a textured black that actually looks like smoke or more of a solid black as in no texture at all?

BBQSteve,
I'm not sure who you're addressing the question to, but the smoke, regardless of the color he sees, uses a solid color and therefore will look solid. The orange smoke effect is attached to a tiny torch looking thingy and there isn't any textures associated either with the smoke or the torch.

If the orange smoke effect, fx_OrangeSmoke.fx, and the Medical Temp library are installed where they should be, then the smoke should show up orange in the tester and in the scenery that uses it.

Carl,
Again, as I posted above, what sim are you using? Older versions of P3D had some effect issues. You're obviously having effect issues in general and elsewhere besides just the orange smoke issue.

Thus my question as to "BLACK" as in non textured and black as in textured ualani.

From his last post, I gather he had no texture and smoke WAS solid black.

Carl,
Glad you got it fixed! who would have guessed that that was your problem? Do you remember what settings you originally had that created your problem? Might help someone else sown the line.

Hi BQSteve,
I gathered that he otherwise had textures, since he didn't mention black buildings, objects, etc., but that his smoke effect colors were black. A matter of terminology I guess.

I misspoke about effects not using textures. In fact they do. However the colors of the base textures can be manipulated in the effect properties when designing an effect. In this case the smoke effect using a base texture was made to look orange. If he was missing the base texture used for the effect he probably would have just seen floating black squares. Whoever developed the effects design package was a pure genius.

A great deal of the software developed for FSX and before, was very cutting edge.  You are right about the effects system.   There are literally millions and millions of different kind of effects that can be achieved using the .fx parameters.
