Ultimate Carenado 185 config/air files
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:39:01 PM »
Just thought I would pass this info along...

www.Bushpounder.com has posted updated aircraft.cfg and .air files for the Carenado 185.
These were done by Bernt Stolle, who actually modified the same files last year, and Carenado included them in a patch.
Mr. Stolle has apparently continued his work on tweaking them.

Here's the info from the Bushpounder site:
Quote
These configs and airfiles were modified by Bernt Stolle. They cover the standard wheel, tundra, amphibious, straight float and ski versions. They were beta tested by several people, one being a real world bush pilot with many hours in type.These are now the most realistic files offered for the Carenado C-185 to date.

Files can be found here:

I have been using the modified .cfg and AIR files for some time now and they make the C185 handle and perform like the real thing much more than out of the box from Carenado.  The patch from Carenado is not as current or as good as Bernt Stolle's latest version on Bushpounder's site.

The Tundra Tire model is more than a little 'bouncy' with these great updated .cfg and AIR files.  You need both by the way, but you can alter the contact points to dampen the springyness of the Cessna spring steel gear.  If you taxi over unimproved ground with the new AIR file the A/C can begin to bounce to the point of overturning unless you do change the contact points for the main gear.

The Tundra tire difference was a bit surprising the first landing with the new files, but I love it.   :o
Much better performance over all.  :)

Aaron,
just go into the aircraft.cfg file and alter the two points shown in bold below.  Those are for the main gear, you do not need to alter the tailwheel.

[contact_points]
static_pitch = 9.0
static_cg_height = 3.5
max_number_of_points = 9
gear_system_type=4
tailwheel_lock=1
                                                            //  8     9   10
point.0 = 1, -21.6,   0.0, -0.80, 1200, 0, 0.65, 60, 0.10, 2.5, 0.30, 0, 0, 0, 0, 140
point.1 = 1, -2.95,  -3.5, -4.20, 2000, 1, 0.75,  0, 0.22, 2.5, 0.50, 0, 0, 2, 0, 140
point.2 = 1, -2.95,   3.5, -4.20, 2000, 2, 0.75,  0, 0.22, 2.5, 0.50, 0, 0, 3, 0, 140
point.3 = 2, -4.60, -17.0,  3.28, 1500, 0, 0.00,  0, 0,      0,    0, 0, 0, 5, 0, 0 //LW
point.4 = 2, -4.60,  17.0,  3.28, 1500, 0, 0.00,  0, 0,      0,    0, 0, 0, 6, 0, 0 //RW
point.5 = 2,   1.2,  0.0,   -2.2, 1500, 0, 0.00,  0, 0,      0,    0, 0, 0, 9, 0, 0 //tail
point.6 = 2,   1.2,  0.0,   -2.2, 1500, 0, 0.00,  0, 0,      0,    0, 0, 0, 4, 0, 0 //Fslg
point.7 = 2, -18.75,  0.0,  6.45, 1500, 0, 0.00,  0, 0,      0,    0, 0, 0, 7, 0, 0 //Aux1
point.8 = 2, -14.12,  0.0,  0.01, 1500, 0, 0.00,  0, 0,      0,    0, 0, 0, 8, 0, 0 //Aux2

warning, I tried this and i only have SP2 not Accerlation and it didn't work at all for me, the planes would bounce violently around like if they were on hydraulics...

Brian,
what exactly did you try?  Are you saying you tried the new and better Air File and .cfg file and it did not work cause it was too bouncy?  Or are you saying that you tried the new Air File and .cfg file AND altered the contact points after installing the new files and it still was too bouncy?  Can not tell from your post what you did for sure.
Unless the Carenado C185 is made for Acceleration only the new files would not make any difference.  Make sure you alter just the two numbers that are highlighted in bold text in my post.  The 0.50 seems to be what most of the user's have found to work the best.  Even with the alteration if you try to taxi too fast on off airport ground textures it will get really rough in a hurry, kinda like real life!

This is what carenado's site shows for requirements:

"Technical Requirements:
Windows XP - Vista - 7 (32 or 64 bits)
Microsoft Flight Simulator FSX with SP1 and SP2 (or Acceleration Pack) installed.
Pentium V/2GHz or similar – 1GB RAM – 128MB graphics card
440MB hard disk space available."

Seems to me it SHOULD work without Accel.

BP;)

Well from what it says there it certainly will work without Acceleration being installed.  The reason Acceleration is mentioned is because it includes SP2 which from what the blurb says is what is needed for the C185 to work in FSX correctly.
Brian,
have you seen my post asking exactly what you did with the updated AIR file and .cfg file?

ok, I installed the cfg and air file and that was all, nothing else

I'll try it again with the above mod and see how that goes..  but last time I had to reinstall the 185 from the original files...

and I'm talking like taxing 5 kts and then bounce bounce all over the place.

Glad it worked for you, if it still bounces too much just increase the size of the number in that spot in the contact points.  Smaller numbers mean more bounce.
Oh and if you back up your AIR file and aircraft.cfg file before you make the changes then you do not have to re-install the airplane just delete the new AIR file and .cfg and put the backups into the A/C folder and your good to go.
