Problems Plan G and MapQuest
« on: July 12, 2016, 07:58:26 AM »
Since a couple of days, when opening plan G, we get the message from MapQuest+Developer: "As of July 11, 2016, direct tile access has been discontinued." I cannot get to the blog post they are pointing to and on the mapquest forum, questions remain unanswered.
On the Plan G forum it is suggested to switch to  OpenStreetMap, but I can't see any terrain there. And the option OpenCycleMap has terrain but no roads. For VFR flying I prefer to see a combination of roads and terrain. Anybody knows more about this...?
Cheers
Marcel

Just have been playing around again with Plan G. OpenCyclesMap indeed also shows roads, but without legends or labels...

I have two sites I like to watch with unmanned solar boats ...one crossing the Atlantic, one crossing the Pacific. On the former, I went to look at its "track" today and got the same MapQuest error we are seeing with Plan-G.

http://www.solar-voyager.com/trackatlantic.html

If you look at the error on the map, it looks like MapQuest isn't supporting anything but paid applications getting rid of these free ones.  So this isn't unique to Plan-G.

The two boats are:
Sea Charger - Pacific Crossing - http://www.seacharger.com/tracking.html
Solar Voyager - Atlantic Crossing - http://www.solar-voyager.com/

(Why does Doug watch solar powered unmanned boats?  I don't know)
