STC mod looking for tester(s)...
« on: March 03, 2011, 08:26:51 AM »
got inspiration from a video I saw of the newest offering from Texas Turbine Conversions, and just had to do it..

Cessna 208 Supervan is a Cessna 208(675) Caravan or 208B Grand Caravan retrofitted with a Honeywell TPE331-12JR engine flat rated at 900shp and a 110" 4 blade prop.. this equates to a 25-30% shorter takeoff run, a 38kt increase in max TAS, a 14% reduction in fuel burn at cruise, and a whole lotta fun..

unfortunately I can't model the 4 blade prop on the default C208B visual model, but I have finished my initial flight modelling, and would like someone to try it out..

*edit* made a clarification

PM sent, but on the subject of propellers, go look for a chap who goes by the name of "Banana Bob" in several fora. He's a propeller expert if you want realistic stuff. Best place to find him is Sim Outhouse or Facebook.

I'm interested too. How does an 38kt increase work with the current airspeed gauge, does it need to be replaced? Also, for the spinning propeller, it's not difficult to make it a four blade (I can do that for you, if it's needed), but as you said, the actual model is the problem.

Any chance you can do this for the Carenado version too?

Very cool initiative, thanks!

PM Sent..

As for the gauges, I'll be working on the set of corrected gauges for the Airspeed, Prop RPM, Fuel Flow, Torque, etc.

Just finished the flight model so far..

I have applied this not just to the default Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, but also the Friendly Panels Cessna 675 and 675 Amphibian (these are basically Cessna 208 Caravans, rather than the Grand Caravan), so transferring the flight model to the Carenado model is actually rather easy to do...

Won't there be the wrong number of levers etc. inside the cockpit? I must go browse airliners net...

nope... the Cessna Caravan is already a Turboprop... this STC replaces the 675hp, 1900rpm Pratt & Whitney PT6A engine with a 900hp, 1600 rpm Honeywell TPE331 engine  (incidentally the same engine that is on the Jetstream 31)

Just goes to show then how often I've actually sat inside one even in sim. I had better give this one a fly and see what I've been missing all this time...

Not much with a paraffin heater ;)

here's a video of some paraffin heater fun: a promo video shot in Alaska of the Texas Turbine Caravan drag racing a stock Caravan, and you'll be happy to know that the chase plane was a Piper Super Cub :)

Does anyone have access to a Caravan?

I would like details of the external placards - readable please. Or may you have a copy of the ATA Chapter 11 "Placards and Markings"?

Just curious, but would be grateful too.

Tried it with the update today. The throttle and prpm varies wildly. I eased back on the throttle and the rpm dropped to zero before moving back up and start fluctuating. Man, it's fast though!

I tried painting it to look like one of Texas Turbine Caravans, but that gave me a headache...

Because of some trainee courses I won't be around for more testing untill Saturday.

yeah, I am still working on it... trying to find out why the engine surges when the throttles are moved quickly.. with the inputs I have gotten so far, it is just about dead on for everything else... I owe all of you who are helping out a big thank you!

Perhaps we shouldn't move the throttles quickly? Gas turbines aren't piston engines ;) There's an engine condition lever which is either off, idle or open. There's the throttle thing which you use to set your power - gently. And then there's the prop pitch lever to set the prop rpm to optimum.

I have some concern that the acceleration/deceleration is too "strong" i.e. the head movement seems too "violent" perhaps?

Anyways... I have been away all day and am now going into my evening relax modus. I'll be flying more later on tomorrow probably. Places to do, things to see...
