Looking for Beaver sound
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:10:00 PM »
Hi,
Misty Moorings and the DHC-2 Beaver, belong, at least for me,  together. But I am missing an, as real as possible, Beaver sound.  Radial engines are having a very typical sound and exactly that, I am missing on the FSX Beaver’s.  Does somebody know a source where to get an authentic Beaver sound ?
Greetings from winterly Austria

Someone posted this link earlier (dunno who it was, I dug it out of my browser history), it's for a Beaver sound pack by Sonic Solutions. http://www.simviation.com/simviation/download.php?ID=7467

I haven't tried it yet myself, but it sounds like it's what you're looking for!  :)

Glenn (Beaverdriver) and I have talked quite about about the Beaver's sound.
He says the default FSX beaver sound is the closest he has heard.
Dusty,

I tried both, the "default" FSX beaver sounds best to me ... the other one had a "repeating rhythm" ... uhm, uhm, uhm ... the default is steady.

Well I fly the RW DHC 6 Twotter and the CAF variant CC-138 and I live by the Yellowknife Water aerodome.
The default is pretty accurate and one of few things MS got right. Ask any beaver driver on Vancouver Island in BC and they'll agree. Sonic's set is also fairly accurate for the beaver. Just remeber a golden rule of the Beaver and Twotter no two are a like. A good pilot of these two must make them there 2nd and 3rd wife and they'll get you home safe to the No1 wife and dinner. Also #1 don't second guess your air mech.

Hi All,
thank you for your comments. I agree, the default FSX Beaver sound is not bad, I like it more than the original Aerosoft Beaver soundfile. Every soundfile I have tried so far, had good sequences and not so good ones. I have just downloaded the sonic-solution soundfile from simviation, as mentioned by Wildbird. My first impression was that it may even be better than default FSX sound. But this is my taste. I will give it a try.
Thank you again.

Hey Bruno,
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I've been away for a while tending a sick parent.

As Dusty noted, I know the default Beaver to be the real sounds. I flew Beavers commercially for quite a few years so I "kind of" know what they sound like  ;). The only issue with the default Beaver sounds is the pump for the flaps (and should be the same sound for the skis on the wheel/ski or wheels on an amphib versions) is too loud. What I did was alias the default Beaver sounds to the Aerosoft Beaver (I actually prefer the default FSX Beaver to the AS ones, but I need the wheel/ski version which the default doesn't have) and turned down the volume of the flaps sound drastically so you can barely hear it over an idling engine (you can't hear it with power much above idle).

Insofar as the AS "Beaver" sounds - any resemblence between those and the real Beaver is purely coincidental and not to be confused with the real thing   ::). Anyway, FWIW, I'd go with the default sounds, and for that matter, the default machine if you fly floats only. That's not to take anything away from the Aerosoft machines, but they have been a bit too "modernized" for my liking, especially in the panel. They also gave it electric flaps. I don't know if that is an actual/recent conversion or not, but I have never seen a Beaver with electric flaps. All the ones I flew were hydraulic and were much more durable for that reason.

Just a "by-the-by", one things I did think was really neat about the Aerosoft Beaver - they did up CF-FHR, and in the colours of White River Air. That's one of the Beavers I flew IRL when I worked out of White River in 1983. It was a superb airplane. I was chatting with a Beaver pilot recently where I work and he says they just did another engine change in it last year, but it's getting pretty tired now. No wonder - it's SN is 48 and it was made in 1948. It was a fabulous short field performer and the machine I was assigned to that summer (although I flew the other 2 as well).
Glenn (a.k.a. BeaverDriver, 'cause that's what I flew IRL :) )

In case anyone is interested, I came across a mod for the default Beaver that allows you to use it as an amphibian.  It modifies the contact points and makes no graphical changes. You'll need to assign a key for gear or use the default G key. If you look at an outside view, it looks like the plane is sitting off the ground on it's floats. But if you just want to use the default Beaver as an amphibian from the cockpit, this will do it!  :)
Replace the contact points in your aircraft.cfg with this. (back up original)...

/// Default Beaver-Mod to allow amphibian ops. (non graphical)

I agree as well, the areosoft beaver sound along with a few other quirks of the aircraft  bothered me exspecially when you fly in the real world. I found this sound pak at FS Pilot Shop and tried it out.
http://www.fspilotshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2546 One of the things when starting a beaver after fuel priming 3-5 times and pumping the wobble pump to bring your fuel pressure up you throw your starter on for a prop count and then turn your mags on and the 9 cyl. radial will cough to life, well this sound pak has a lot of the true sounds of the radial taxiing, bring power up for takeoff you can hear your engine taking your power setting as you set them. The only sound that did not capture was shut down as you taxi  into the dock it's close. The default beaver is by far still the best and my favorite. If we could put it on wheel/ski for the winter we would be all happy beaver pilots 8)

Hi Bruno. I just posted a new set of Beaver sounds to my site. You may want to try them and see what you think. They were remade by a r/w Beaver/Otter pilot. See the thread in the section "SITE INFORMATION" for more information.
