Dragging my system
« on: October 07, 2015, 05:28:26 PM »
I installed all of the object libraries and Misty's place.  That's it.  When it finally loaded, great frame rates.  No problem, but holy cow, it took nearly 5 minutes to load every time I started a flight.

The more detailed the area, the longer the load time.

For me, using P3Dv2.x plus SSDs following a clean boot, the time from P3D startup to flying in the Western Chugach area of Alaska with SAK ORBX Region and most ORBX payware airports active along with RTMM sceneries is less than 90 seconds.

Rod, so is a 500 GB SSD enough to support FSX, Misty's, ORBX and whatever else on a dedicated FS basis? Sorely tempted to go that route if so. And I remember you saying before that you don't migrate, you re-install. Might be worth it for me. I have load times of 3-5 minutes on a regular basis. Need something to do this winter anyway.

Hi jspair,

I have dual 500 MB SSDs....one for P3D and the other for operating system and everything else.   Each SSD is not yet 50% full. P3D loads faster than FSX, however, when I went to SSDs in the first place, I was using FSX and the load times were reduced significantly.   Doesn't change FPS much.  That is very dependent on CPU speed and graphics board (especially for P3D).

I should also mention that from a clean boot if I go to Seattle it takes an extra 10 - 15 seconds due to the very high density of that scenery.

As an example I have all U.S. and Australia ORBX regions and all RTMM scenery locations loaded into FSX (DX9).  I have not installed my Norway region or most of the RTMM enhancements yet. (in the process of doing a re-build of FSX).  Presently my install is 144 GB on disk and I probably have another 20GB of stuff to load yet.  So a 500 I'm afraid isn't big enoungh if your going to use "All" FSX, ORBX, RTMM scenery.

Here's my flightsim SSD, and both sims "weight" on it.  I also have a separate half terabyte SSD for flightsim related add-on programs and utilities.  ;)  (Sorry the pics are so HUGE. I didn't expect that.) :-[

That's what I was afraid of. I've got 400 RTMM sceneries, with more to come no doubt. ORBX-wise I've got Global, Vector, FS Global Mesh 2010, Global LC NA/Alaska/Canada, Trees, NZSI, PNG, NCA, SAK, PFJ, PNW, NRM, plus Tongass and a few airports, REX Essentials +OD, ASN. Yeah, I can see where a 1/2 Terabyte SSD could get filled up real quick-like. You might see me on the side of the road picking up aluminum cans. Feel free to throw one my way. :-\
