How big is yours?
« on: September 30, 2012, 10:55:03 AM »
What I'm wondering is, how large is your FSX folder? Here's the back-story:

I like having FSX on its own SSD. FSX just runs smoother on a SSD, IMO. (I've read the various forums and know that many say that SSD's offer minimal advantage with FSX, but my experience is that FSX runs much smoother on SSD.) Meanwhile, last spring I loaded FSX on its own 180GB SSD (thinking that 180GB would be plenty of room for expansion if only FSX was on the drive), but I'm now down to around 40GB remaining on the drive. I have EZdok, AccuFeel, 3D Lights, and Plan-G on another drive, but REX is on the FSX drive. I have a relatively few payware planes (Kodiak, BeaverX, Twotter, FR Supercub, Carenado C208, and a freeware Luscombe and Maule) and only Orbx and RTMM scenery (plus Tongass). With Orbx Southern Alaska to be released soon, not to mention Northern Cal, the UK and Europe coming up as well, I know I'm in trouble. I still haven't sprung for New Zealand yet. I can see that the only way to play it safe if I want to continue with FSX on its own SSD is to go with a 512GB drive, and they are still in the neighborhood of $400USD (although they appear to be coming down in price).

So, I'm wondering--how large is your FSX folder and where do you have it installed? How about other components of FSX? Mechanical HDD or SSD?

Thanks,

Ted

Hello,

I installed FSX on a second hard drive reserved for him, a Velociraptor 600 GB, and I have already 350 GB who are used (with REX installed on the hard drive reserved for system and others) ;)

My installation is strictly in the default location for XP, no extra locations or non-default.  I have FSX, All ORBX/FTX scenery areas except for NZNI.  All RTMM and CIRP locations, All OZx airports etc.  I do not have any addon weather etc. files or any ORBX/FTX payware airports installed.  I do have perhaps a couple dozen addon airports in other areas and my installation size is:

76.0GB
135,336 files
3723 folders.

Hi Ted,
I also have FSX installed on a separate SSD (256 GB).
I have all RTMM and CIRP sceneries and enhancements and ORBX PFJ, PNW, CRM, NRM and most ORBX North American airports installed. Finally FSGlobal Mesh product is installed on the SSD.
I also have several payware helicopter addons installed.
My FSX folder is 60GB at the moment.
Other Tools like REX, ASE, FS MAP,PLanG and some others are installed on other drives SSD and HDD.

I have my FSX on a SSD and Plan-G, REX, ASE, FSDiscover, etc are on separate "FSX Support drive" (U:).  I have all things RTMM, and almost all of Orbx collections, to include Australia, New Zealand, and North America.  I have almost 3,000 aircraft, boats, cars, helis, etc, etc.  It looks like I am approaching the same condition as Ted, with merely 45 gigs remaining on my SSD.  It occurs to me that a good "pruning and cleanup" session would be beneficial about now.  I have many years of collecting built up, and many forgotten or junk items sitting in my FSX folders.  I hate to throw anything away.

Jeff I agree w/ you I'm somewhat of a pack-rat or hoarder when it comes to the sim. Everytime I delete something ''because I never need it or use it'' I turn up saying now what the hell  I do that for. The way it's going though I'm also going to have to think about some kind of drive dedicated to FSX. I have  appx 73G just for FSX itself, but the real hog is 103G  that has planes that I don't fly but I ''might'' one day and also some other flight related programs

This is really interesting. It's neat to see the different hardware approaches to FSX.

Nadine--the Raptors in Raid 0 looks like a good approach with plenty of room for expansion.

Spud--you obviously have FSX well under control with no expansion problems.

Jeff--you and I are in the same boat, and it's taking on water! With all the Orbx and RTMM expansion on its way, do you have a 512GB SSD in your sights? Other options?

Hind sight--I was foolish to opt for only 180GB for my FSX drive. Last spring it was on sale for a little over $100 and I jumped. I love the performance, but I will be lucky if it lasts a full year before it will become full.

My two Velociraptor are not in Raid 0.
One is only for FSX, the other is for Windows 7 and all the rest ;)

Yes, I think I will have to get a 512GB SSD this year.  I wanted one originally, but it was too expensive then.  Now I bet I could get one for the same price I paid for the 240 Gig last year.  But I should clean up  and organize things first.  It's a lofty dream, and I've been determined to get in there before.  But alas, once I sit in my chair and fire up FSX, the project is soon forgotten.   :-[

Nadine, I made a wrong assumption when looking at your signature. Sorry.  :-[ I still contend that the Raptors are a good option for FSX. You have a very nice system.

Jeff--I'm going to try to hold off getting a 512GB SSD for as long as I can, thinking that the longer I wait, the lower the price will be. I will keep an eye out for sales, however. But, it will depend on how quickly the Orbx regions are released. Also, if I move REX to another drive I will free up a nice chunk of real estate. BTW, I'm quite envious of your graphics card. Very nice!

All my PC spec's won't fit in the John Henry box,so I'll put my spec's here.

Thermaltake Armor Full Tower, ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3, Intel i7 2600K SandyBridge 3.4 GHz - OC to 4.6 GHz, Corsair H70 Hydro CPU cooler, 16 Gigs of GSkill Ripjaw DDR3 - 1600, EVGA GTX570HD, 2500 MB of GDDR 5, 2.5GB, Corsair TX850 P/S, HT Omega 7.1 sound, AData S510 SATA III 120 GB SSD for boot drive, OCZ Vertex4 512 GB SATA III for my FSX drive, Samsung 2TB 7200rpm SATA II for backup, Monitor - BenQ XL2420-B 24" ultimate LED Gaming Monitor.

I still have a lot of room left on my FSX drive, for a lot more new FTX/OZx/RTMM products.

I've only used 162GB on my current FSX 512 SSD HD.So I have room for more goodies, coming down the pike.
So by then I should have enough saved up for a new 1TB SSD HD.

My FSX is 168 GB, all on my drive C.  I still have over 500 GB free and I have everything ORBX has put out on here, plus REX, PlanG, etc.   Pretty smooth most of the time.

HI guys

it's very simply

you have a SSD for FSX  ok E:/ for example
You can instal all your scenery to an other DD  scenery and ADDON scenery and also for the planes
and you preserve your SSD only for FSX
.. the Arirplanes  in FSX  here you juste réserve the planes 5 or 10 do you utlise fréquently and an other  G:/ or F:/   a folder for the Airplanes FSX  a part of  all you don't need frequently
at this time you can take if you nid it to G:/ and put directly the folder plane in Airplanes FSX folder  and undo all as you want

and all work fine  and your SSD never been Full

i whish that my explanations are understande  :P

Thanks NeptuneP2V7,
I understand fine.  Yes, It's a good idea to have the addon scenery and unused aircraft on an additional drive.  I usually forget that.  Thanks for the reminder.  The addon scenery alone takes a big chunk of the HD space, and to move that would certainly tame the beast that is FSX.
