Thanks NeptuneP2V7,
I understand fine.  Yes, It's a good idea to have the addon scenery and unused aircraft on an additional drive.  I usually forget that.  Thanks for the reminder.  The addon scenery alone takes a big chunk of the HD space, and to move that would certainly tame the beast that is FSX.
I bought Orbx FTX England . . . and now my 240 Gb FSX SSD is full.  I bought a 512 Gb SSD last night, online and it should be delivered next week.  It's funny, I forgot about this conversation when I was buying my new HD.  Selective memory loss, I guess.  I don't feel like shuffling folders around, and I wanted a 512 SSD for my FSX anyway.  With SAK coming, and all the new scenery designing in 2013 coming up, more HD space is called for.

Congratulations Jeff! I think quite a number of us will (of necessity) have 512GB ssd's in the near future. It's still hard for me to fathom, having a half-terabyte of storage dedicated to FSX! However, with the release of Orbx Englland, and SAK and NorCal to be released early 2013, and the continued release of amazing RTMM sceneries--PLUS--Wales, Scotland, No. Ireland, AND I'm sure that some of mainland Europe (maybe France) will probably be released in the next twelve months, not to mention the individual airports (such as Bella Coola, etc.)--I only hope 512GB will be enough. Too much fun!  ;D

BTW, I'm looking at the OCZ Vertex 4 512GB ssd for $389.00 at Amazon w/free shipping. Which one did you decide on, if I may ask?

Here is the description of the one I bought:

Transcend 512GB 720 SATA III 6Gb/s with 560MB/s read and up to 86,000 IOPS with System Clone Software.

It was also $389.99 from Amazon, with Free Shipping.  I used the standard shipping method - (pack mules over the pass.  5-8 days)  I should get it by the end of next week.

Jeff:

That Transcend ssd has all the right specs and ought to house FSX in fine style (and speed). BTW, I think I've received some items via those same pack mules over the pass!  ;D

Neptune:

That's a great set up you have there. Mine is quite similar, except that I don't store FSX on my OS drive, but place all of it on a separate ssd. I think a lot of us are now using similar set ups with slight variations here and there.

Thanks,

Ted

My new SSD arrived today.  Time for action.  I need to transfer 209 gigs of FSX to the new drive.  The largest free drive space I could find on my PC was 116 gigs on my "F" drive.  Some creative thinking was called for.  I couldn't just plug in the new drive because all my drive bays are full, so how to transfer 209 gigs of FSX to the new drive?  I made room on my "F" drive for 150 gigs, and am in the process of making a copy of the drive contents by "zipping up" or ultra-compressing my flightsim drive into a zipfile on my F drive.  Then I can swap the "P" drive for the new one and extract the FSX from the zip back onto it.  The problem now is that it is taking so long to create the zipfile.  I started about 8 hours ago, and it is halfway through now.  Good god, there is alot of stuff in 209 gigs.  I will be down for maintenance while I transfer everything to my new drive.  I'm glad I've got all weekend to do it.   :o

Jeff, I see that the pack mules have arrived and you are now "down for maintenance" and having more fun than anyone should rightly be permitted to have!  ;D  But the reward will be worth it in the end. The question comes to my mind--with all of the great additions coming out from RTMM and Orbx, how long before our new 1/2TB drives are full? It boggles my mind!

Hey, I saw a tech (tech is a nice word for 'geek') article yesterday at Tom's Hardware where they reviewed some of the new SSDs. They liked the Transcend a lot and awarded it a top spot. (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/240gb-256gb-ssd-review,3313.html).

Looking forward to a report on how your 'maintenance' session has gone.

Done!  It took me 15 hours to create the zipfile of my "P:" drive, and a little over an hour this morning to extract it back onto the new drive.  I fired it up moments ago, and it looks like nothing ever happened.  No errors, or glitches.  Yes, I am happy in the end.  ;D

Jeff, that's great news! It's always nice when a project comes together and works on the first attempt. And that's a beautiful screenshot to boot!

Enjoy,
