Long range with simple autopilot?
« on: June 27, 2023, 11:30:00 AM »
Is there a long-range jet or prop plane (Alaska to Hawaii?) that uses only a simple autopilot?  I don't want to spend the time learning the FMC system.  Just curious.

Local legend 9 can cover the distance. It has a simple but functional gyro pilot, just altitude and heading hold

Ah of ole flying boat..... might take agaes to get there but atleast you could land on the water with that flying boat!!.

Ok Doug... The air travel (bird fly) shortest distance between Hawaii and Alaska is 4,942 km= 3,071 miles. If you travel with an airplane (which has average speed of 560 miles) from Hawaii to Alaska, It takes 5.48 hours to arrive.

Ouch a long flight even direct. So which non water bird? Might try the CJ-4 jet which can reach 430 or more?
I think it can go on wing leveler, alt and heading without playing with the FMC.
Prop.. perhaps the only bird with the range might be the DC-6? but at half the speed.

Any other prop that I think of off hand is perhaps a warbird that has the speed but you'll need extra big external fuel tanks!!) cause you're going to need them cause no warbird has a 3000m range!

Quite the challenge.

What sim are you using?  If you are using P3D and have a C-130 in your fleet it should be able to do the distance if the winds are favorable.  I have done flights from KPOB to EGUN non stop.  In the old E model it was 11.5 hrs full fuel load. The new J model should do even better.

MSFS

The PMGD Douglas DC-6 looks good, 4100 range (KLAX/PHHN).
