Money to burn
« on: July 25, 2021, 12:20:52 PM »
Hello

I'm in a quandry. I have had some good fortune and find myself able to spend up to US$2000 on PC things. HURRAH! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now, do I buy a prebuilt capable of running FS2020 at, or close to, 'ideal' [my experience with prebuilds has been good, so I have no concerns here]

OR

do I upgrade my RX580 8Gb to a GPU that will make full use of my R7 1700X CPU?

In P3D my CPU would be running at around 40% on average whilst the GPU would be at 100%. This leads me to think I can upgrade the GPU significantly. But I may be wrong.

I'd welcome some thoughts on the matter, especially choice of GPU and CPU.

Thanks.

Congrats, that's nice!

First of all I would wait until Tuesday and see how your rig performs after the update. A new GPU surely makes sense if you would build your own rig then later on some time. If you go for a prebuilt PC you can decide after the update which CPU and wich GPU it should have. This may be different to how it was before the update. If you can wait even longer, wait until the DX12 update shows up.

Hi Karl

Yes indeed, I was forgetting about the update.
And do we have any timeframe for DX12?

Not to my knowledge. They have the code ready, as the Xbox version is on DX12.

And that's another option, I suppose. I could get an XBox......

As far as I know you cannot install the RTMM addons on the Xbox. Only addons from the Marketplace will work.

Yes, indeed!
A very good point, Karl.
No XBox for me, then.

Noted, Neptune.

I think I'll just update my GPU as and when I can get hold of a card at a reasonable price!

I'm resigned to doing this next year - along with the Bravo Throttle Quadrant.

An update.

After much on-line research, which was thoroughly enjoyable, I have decided to go with a pre-built small form build:

i5 11600K
ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-l Gaming WiFi
32Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3600 Mhz
RTX 3060 TI 8Gb
Corsair 650W Gold PSU
2 Tb PCIe M2 - this should be plenty as FS2020 add-on storage demands are relatively small to P3D etc I have found.

My options were limited in some areas [mobo/gpu] as you can imagine, but having seen some YouTube vids specifically for this CPU/GPU combo, I'm pretty confident this rig will give me good results - hopefully for years to come!!!

I could stretch to an i7 CPU, but is it required? I'm tempted, but if it's not going to do anything appreciable..........

So, comments are more than welcome.

I believe it is scheduled to be released with the November update but tbh I'm not expecting it to be the miracle cure for everyone's problems

Probably not. But still, it could make a good sim just a tad better.

Neptune - I've been an AMD man for 30 odd years so this will be a first for me!
BUT I'm still thinking I might change my mind.....better the devil you know and all that.
