Addon Scenery and Enhancements / Ketchikan Harbor is now available!
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:31:52 AM »
Ketchikan Harbor is a scenery enhancement that provides a significant amount of extra detail in the Ketchikan Harbor area as well as Eagle Air, a fictitious floatplane tour and charter service, that specializes in flying to RTMM scenery locations.

The Ketchikan Harbor scenery adds a small commercial dock/float plane area (boardwalk/pilings etc.) just southeast of the 5KE water runways and just off the bow of the cargo/freighter ship docked to the northwest of all of the cruise ships.  This is where Eagle Air can be found.  In addition, scenery objects have been added around the freighter cargo dock and additional buildings and trees have been added surrounding the general harbor area and, also in downtown Ketchikan.  The intent of the building additions in downtown Ketchikan was to diminish the glass and steel look and add more color both in the daytime and at night which is how Ketchikan downtown actually looks.

For those of you who can fly with good frame rates in PAKT with SP1, this scenery addon should work well.  In order to minimize the hit to frame rates, I limited the number of addon larger buildings along the edge of the coast to just the immediate area around Eagle Air.  Dieter Linde, one of the beta testers, has reported no significant loss of frame rates on his rig. But of course, each individual rig will vary on a case by case basis.  There are two .bgls provided and one of them can be dropped to help improve frame rates, if necessary, while still providing the immediate Eagle Air surroundings.  You would however, lose the freight dock enhancements, the downtown Ketchikan enhancements and scattered scenery objects.

Eagle Air is a great place for your floatplane to depart from on its daily schedule of tours/charters and then return in the late afternoon.  Download the Ketchikan Harbor today and try it.

IMPORTANT:  Ketchikan Harbor scenery enhancement requires that the FSX Mesh Resolution be set to exactly 5m....the ORBX standard.  Any more or less will blow up the  scenery boardwalk which is sitting on the bumpy shoreline and very sensitive to mesh resolution.

This scenery enhancement  requires FSX Acceleration and the ORBX PAKT with SP1 scenery product as well as two publicly available object libraries listed in the readme.  This scenery addon does not change or move any ORBX files and no ORBX objects were used in its creation.

See screenshots below:

Ketchikan Downtown at night:

As you can see, the added detail is fully lighted and looks beautiful at night together with ORBX's PAKT SP1 product.  A nighttime flight up the PAKT Harbor coast is a must with this enhancement.

I would like to thank Dieter Linde, Robert Abernathy and Brad Allen for their feedback, suggestions and beta testing during the development of the Ketchikan Harbor scenery enhancement.

Ketchikan Harbor is now available in the Scenery section of the RTMM libraries.

Enjoy!

Hi GrayRider,

Maybe this will help explain what is supposed to happen........

I believe this package actually expects you to copy the entire Addon Scenery folder (provided in the scenery pack) to your main FSX Folder.  The computer system would then automatically (you could do it manually) copy the contents of the scenery folder into the FSX\Addon Scenery\Scenery folder, copy the contents of the texture folder into the FSX\AddonScenery\Texture folder and copy the three cabin folders into the FSX\Addon Scenery folder.  You would then need to go to your FSX Scenery Libary and activate the 3 cabin folder libraries making sure they are above the Holger's Tongass scenery entry.

The way the scenery system works,  the 3 cabin folders, once in the library, will be able to find the special file items (from the cabin scenery pack) in the scenery and texture folders located inside the FSX\Addon Scenery folder since they are autoloaded as part of the standard FSX\Addon Scenery folder load up at run time..

Hope this helps.

Nice pics, Jeff.  I especially like the next to last one with the rising sun reflection off the water.

The Ketchikan Harbor scenery is on final and has been approved by the RTMM staff for landing.  Just waiting for the scenery to be uploaded to the library.......

,,,,With my poor old system I can't run the ORBX/PAKT w/SP1 scenery as I'm almost at a slide show at PAKT now but for those that can from what I have seen of this addon it will be excellent.

Oops, meant to comment that Ketchikan Harbor was designed to minimize frame rate loss.  For those that are able to run PAKT with SP1, Eagle Air is the only area where I added significant structures to the harbor edge.  I did not stretch structures up and down the whole harbor coast edge to keep the frame rate hit down.  I did spread out structures in the town to make the whole coastal area from south of PAKT to downtown Ketchikan look a bit more uniform in the level of buildings/trees etc.

Rod,
Just another question, have you looked on the Home page of the site and read the Help Wanted section?  Click on the RULES TO FOLLOW link for submissions information as we have certain protocols that have to be met for the scenery to be accepted for download and it is best to understand what a package need to have before finalizing the scenery you want to share.

Rod,
I have seen your screen shots on the ORBX forums and it looks superb to say the least.  You say you have added some autogen to the area, was this due to the lack thereof due to the PFJ birds addon problem?  Have you deactivated or somehow overcome that anomaly now?
With my poor old system I can't run the ORBX/PAKT w/SP1 scenery as I'm almost at a slide show at PAKT now but for those that can from what I have seen of this addon it will be excellent.  How does this fit in with the ferry AI traffic being worked on by others?
Oh yeah, welcome aboard mate I think you'll find a nice comfortable home away from home in the bush here.

I disabled the Birds in PFJ and then just added some additional autogen to help it look better.

Don't know of any interference with the AI ferry traffic .....one of my testers is involved with the AI Ferry Traffic and he said there was no conflict that he knew of.

Addon Scenery and Enhancements / Coming Soon......Ketchikan Harbor
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:39:16 PM »
Hi all,

For those of you who were hoping for some extra detail and a a little denser set of buildings and trees up the harbor coast from downtown Ketchikan than ORBX's superb PAKT (SP1) provides, Ketchikan Harbor can help fill that need.

If you were looking for some place to go after landing your floatplane at 5KE, Eagle Air tour and charter service might be the place to dock.

Ketchikan Harbor adds over 300 objects to the Ketchikan Harbor area...just enough to improve the look but not so much that frame rates are crushed.

Ketchikan Harbor should be submitted to RTMM for finalization very, very soon.

Stay tuned....

Addon Scenery and Enhancements / Re: New problem for PFJ scenery
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:28:45 PM »
Hi All,

While I was working on a new Ketchikan Harbor scenery addon for ORBX PAKT (SP1), I discovered this problem and posted it on the ORBX boards.  I don't think David has seen it yet.  When he developed his Birds in PFJ addon he actually designed some special autogen supression to help frame rates but made sure it didn't suppress any of the ORBX PFJ scenery.

Unfortunately, he did not anticpate what would happend when ORBX finally got around to adding Airport scenery like PAKT.  I am sure he will develop a fix when he has time. Because of that special design, the suppression of the PAKT autogen takes place even if the PAKT.bgl in David's addon is disabled. So, until David gets to it, any ORBX PAKT users will have to disable the whole Birds in PFJ scenery.
