Screenshots / Nice (and scary) view of Fairweather Mountain
« on: July 07, 2019, 05:36:34 PM »
Passengers who joined me on the Short Fields Glacier Region Tour had some nice views of Fairweather Mountain. The distance between the sea shore and the 15.3k ft mountain is just 10nm. Very impressive scenery!

Wow, a good one! At first I thought it was a photo  ;D

Thank you very much!

Kaha, the official figures (PMDG manual) for landing over a 50ft obstacle is 2900ft flaps down, no wind, 1000ft elevation at the max landing weight 80,000lbs. Taking off is a different story :) .

Everts Air, the last US operator of these aircraft, probably does not make such stunts.

Norm, do you think this aircraft could be added to the Misty Flying Club fleet, please?

Sorry for stealing a thread, but ... since PBY is a pretty heavy aircraft (you need a type rating for that), as well as for DC-3 (and I suppose that in Canada/USA single pilot operations of that aircraft are not allowed) ... are big and heavy PMDG tubeliners out of question?

I mean this one, obviously :-D

(DC-6 near Misty Moorings terminal, PAWS)

There is a paint kit so I could try to make a Misty repaint for it ;-) .

I have FSWX + Rex Sky Force. Works nice.

Be careful about the date you set in the simulator if you choose the option in FSWX to search for weather depending on the sim date and time. If it can not find weather for the date, it crashes.

Milviz Beaver and Aerosoft Twin Otter.

Well, it remembered me this mission
(Denali Base Camp Charter) from FSX which brought me into a virtual bush flying...

I played it for the first time just before I went from FSX to X-Plane ... only to move back (well, to P3D) 3 years ago and the Return to Misty Moorings + ORBX sceneries were the sole reason. :-D

Wow! Looking forward to it!

My choices would be either Milviz Beaver or Aerosoft Twin Otter.

Misty's Place / Re: New computer: Ryzen 5 + RX 580?

Thanks for replies!

The M.2 SSD can be much faster than a SATA SSD if it adheres to the NVMe specification. Without it (just M.2) it's as fast as the SATA SSDs. I opted for it because of its speed - I won't use the computer only for gaming and I will make use of it. I also plan to add more disk space (1-2TB SATA SSD) and more RAM later. When I get more space I'll move games there and leave this just for system, swap, programs and work.

I bought it couple of days ago, still didn't have a time tune the P3D for it properly. With very dense scenery and normal autogen (low draw distance) the CPU was the bottleneck (what a surprise :-) ) and over Wasilla area I was getting around 26 fps - this was the worst one. The rest of RTMM was 40-60fps (while 60 being the vsync cap).  So a CPU overclock is a must but the stock cooler wouldn't allow much. I'll put more money into it, probably during January. DCS World with medium details can be reliably at 60fps everywhere and GTA V on max settings has some drops during scenes with a lot of lighting and shadows. GPU is the bottleneck there, CPU is fine.

The only change I made to the posted specs was faster RAM - 3200MHz CL16. I learnt that the Ryzen CPUs internally depend on memory clock speed.

What are your settings and fps, jeff3163?

Misty's Place / New computer: Ryzen 5 + RX 580?
« on: October 06, 2018, 07:07:26 AM »

I'm thinking of buying a new computer and I'd be delighted to hear your opinions.

Budget needs to be kept "wife-friendly" which in my case means USD 900 (it's actually 1150 but here in Europe electronics is more expensive than in the USA so 850-900 is a better baseline). Further upgrades like more RAM or another HDD are planned.

My typical mission is flying around ORBX SAK + Misty Moorings scenery or DCS Gazelle (low and slow flying helicopter) - these are the missions I would like to optimize for. For flying PMDG or Q400 I don't really care  whether I have 60 or 24 fps.

I'd like to have REX clouds, very dense scenery, detailed clouds, dynamic lighting, volumetric fog and 30fps stable at 1920x1080 resolution. HDR lighting, some autogen, water reflections and shadows would be a nice bonus.

CPU:        AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (6 core with hyper threading, 3.4-3.9GHz)
GPU:        Sapphire Radeon Nitro+ Rx580 8GB
Hard drive: ADATA XPG SX8200 M.2 NVMe 480GB
MB:         Gigabyte B450 AORUS Pro
Memory:     2x8GB ADATA XPG GAMMIX D10 (2666 MHz CL 16 Non-ECC)
PSU:        Corsair TX650M (650W, 80+ Gold)

I plan to add another at least 16GB of RAM and 1TB HDD in the future.

I saw couple of benchmarks and the Ryzen 5 CPU was on par with i5-8600 which cost twice as much (at least here). I wonder if it's worth the extra cost. Same thing with the GPU - Rx580 is roughly on par with GeForce 1060 in benchmarks and the cost is the same but has 8GB of VRAM while the NVidia has 6GB.

What are your opinions on this, please?

Thanks for replies. No problem with that, even commercial (and expensive) software have problems. Couple of years ago I stumbled across a bug report which had been some 10 years old. I tried to contact the reporter only to learn he had already passed away :-D .

The system here is very good even it has a glitch here and there. Since the requirements of Misty's Flying Club are so specific I don't expect everything to be perfect, especially when an opensource or free software is used. You have been doing a remarkable job! Thanks!

Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / Charter flight to Middle of Nowhere?
« on: September 30, 2018, 03:54:32 AM »

What should I put into Cigar Box's destination field if I want to fly to a place which doesn't have a destination code, please?

When filing an ICAO flight plan (if I am not mistaken) the pilots put 'ZZZZ' into the destination field and put a 'DEST/' remark into the remark field. However here the 'ZZZZ' designation probably confused the system a little bit.

I flew from Anchorage (LHD) to Crescent Lake cabin

and when the pireps were accepted the system awarded me the "10K flight miles" badge.

1) What is the correct procedure to file such charter flight, please?
2) Can this badge be taken away from me, plese? I want it when I deserve it ;-) .
