Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / Re: Cigar Box locking up mid flight
« on: October 02, 2019, 12:42:19 AM »
There are several issues in play....as Norm has said, the number of Pireps now in the system slows down calculation for Top Pilot.....that Program in itself is problematic and has been since the day it wass released.  Now we have the choice not to use it or live with the problems.  Because it is not supported, what you see is what we have.....until someone takes on the challenge of a rewrite.  This isn't likely because the core program is undergoing a make over  In process now for several years there is no release date which just means we are in limbo until something is changed.

As for the lock up in Cigar Box, first of all this is a kaCARS II program, not kaCARS.  Unfortunately Jeff is no longer supporting the program, but the problems seems to have been a Microsoft issue that has been quietly resolved.  I wish I could tell you more, but the fact is that I was about to roll back kaCARS to the free version when all of a sudden we were back on line.

There very well may be some lingering issues, but it seems like most functions are now active and we are back to as close to normal as possible.

Please let us know your issues.....we will do our best to resolve them.

Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / CigarBox is working.......
« on: September 26, 2019, 12:03:01 PM »
As most of you know, CigarBox stopped reporting Pireps and began locking up about the 18th of September.  I was reported that other Virtual Airlines were having the same problem using the same program (kaCARSII). After a lot of hours working on the problem it didn't appear to be anything on our end.  While it is hard to ascertain the exact problem, it appears to come from Microsoft and more specifically Windows 10  So, for now we seem to be back to business as usual.

We thank you for both your feedback and your patience.

I have tried this several times today and of course I didn't see the error....but I have.  I don't know of any Pirep that hasn't filed....it seems that the confirmation part is what is going astray.  Unfortunately the developer has stopped providing support.  Norm and I hate to abandon Cigar Box as we had the application designed for our use, but it is obvious that something isn't right.

What I don't know is if the problem is with Cigar Box or the hosting service...or maybe even the web site.  Right now the issue is irritating but to effecting the actual operation.  Your flights are being recorded, usually within seconds....the pop up or lack there of remain a mystery .....but we are looking into it.....no promises of a solution but we are on it!

WideFS should be included with the paid version of FSUIPC.  Being somewhat of a purist, I don't use any programs other than charts and real weather and have never had an issue with the system bogging down.  But.......all is dependent on CPU, GPU and other resource dependent programs.  It is my understanding that this works well, but I don't for sure.

And to add to Norms comment.....there doesn't seem to be a fix.  The problem is with the airplane and not Cigar Box......it's just one of those things.

Hi Karl,
It all depends on how the network is set up.  If you are running P3D on the Client then yes.  But if you are using two different computers, no.  The easy way is to set it up and see if Cigar Box can communicate with P3D.

Neither Norm or I have tried it, so you get to be the official tester!

Simon,
If your drive is in fact corrupt and unusable, simply reformat it.  Yes, it will remove all the data contained, but if you can't use it, nothing is lost.  If the drive formats them the drive is mechanically sound and should be back to it's old self.

Cigar box can be placed on any drive you choose, and in fact could be installed multiple times using different paths/directories/drives.

There is no need to go inside the case unless you want to add (or subtract) a drive.

Martin.....Norm touched on the problem, let me expand.  The base program that most on line flying use is way outdated and has had problems for years.  In those same years, 3rd party supplies have written various programs...one being Top Pilot another Tour Center both programs we use.  The good news is that there is a new base program in the works that hopefully will solve most of the programs problems.  Time will tell.  But....., since this is a freeware program and supported by the community, progress is very slow.  The milage in Top Pilot is simply not right and no one wants to try to fix it.  Errors are most noticeable in higher milage....those that don't fly as much seem to be correct.  So......the obvious solution is to drop Top Pilot or, if possible, the mileage portion, and to eliminate mileage awards.  But we loose a few good things that are working.  In the meantime, we are trying to eliminate only the parts that are in error....we will let you know if there is any progress.

Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / Re: Navigation without autopilot?

Every aircraft in the RTMM hanger can be hand flown without a problem, but for most folks, you are making to large of correction.  In the real airplane, trim is in many cases less sebsitive making the problem less obvious, but you can't and don't haul the airplane around.  I see many sim folks come in to high or two fast, both leading to bad landings....planning is the key.  You must know the exact settings for cruise, climb, decent and approach and you must practice flying the exact speed.  Trim carefully and in small increments....but the key word is practice.  Real pilots practice....a lot in the beginning.  The sim doesn't give you all the sensory clues, but you can adapt....for those of us fortunate to fly in the real world....sometimes I get those feelings in the office chair....mind over matter....or what ever.

In flight school I had the metal one, but then got the round one which I use daily.

But to answer the question at hand, Navigation without auto pilot.  Step one is learning how to fly without it.  The basic requirements for a private pilot is to maintain a given altitude within 50 feet and a heading within +- 5 degrees.  This requires picking out a land mark and keeping you heading to it and watching the horizon out the window.  It takes practice, this is a skill.  Learning the settings to effect a -500 fpm decent using power settings and trim...watching the airspeed.  Learning the proper climb.....each airplane is different.  Once you can actually fly the aircraft, then it is time to learn to navigate....one thing at a time.

Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / Re: About landing
« on: September 05, 2018, 01:30:40 PM »
With all this discussion about landings, the thought came to me that landing is the only thing that most pilots do that is not automated.  Now I know that technology marches forward, and one of the problems in the flying business is that there are two few pilots....why, it's boring, and with less to do in the cockpit, the pilots aren't paid very much, endure physical requirements and a mandatory retirement.

Some airlines now require pilots to let the airplane auto land.

Now I learned to fly in the mid 70's and to this day fly the same way.  In my view, flight planning, hand flying, and landing is the lure of flight.  My most enjoyable time in the cockpit was flying a sailplane.  This requires pilot skills, skills that are getting rusty for all pilots who fly for a living.  In a simulator, I can't imagine using GPS or Autopilot....if the simulator could auto land, you could set up a flight, push the start button and go out and mow the lawn and come back just in time to taxi to the gate.

Enjoy your next flight.

Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / Re: Tongass (40) entries
« on: September 02, 2018, 12:08:53 AM »
It seems strange that only the TF entries are gone...or are you telling us that the file is now the default file...as in the program rebuilt the file...as it will if it is missing.  While this rarely happens, it can ....which is a good reason to make a copy of the completed file....just in case.  The easiest way to fix it is to download Holger's file and import it and then re-number.  If the file was indeed rebuilt, then you will be installing scenery as well.

And you will have to move and then fix the
ai enteries.

« on: September 02, 2018, 12:02:46 AM »
Maybe this will help.  First of all take a look at your cigar box settings....you have a check box to fly by flight numbers.  If you are flying tours, the box is unchecked.  If you are flying by flight numbers then you check the box;  It's either or.  Flying a tour, go to the tour center and sign up for the tour, and then go to the details. There you will find the option to fly the leg.  click.  Once the big check mark appears the flight is ready to be imported into cigar box.  In cigar box you will use the button to get the flight data and once clicked, the entire form should populate.  If you are flying by the flight # and followed the change in settings, you then enter the flight number and the form will populate.

The only time that duplicates usually appear is when you file the pirep (by clicking) more than once.  So give it a try.  I will around on Monday.

Misty Flying Club and Multi Player / Re: Save SIM Position

There is an option if you forget to save the flight.  You can look up the lat/long in RTMM and then enter that into the sim to get you back to the spot you need.
