Title: RTMM WayPoints Project
Post by: Doug on May 26, 2020, 02:59:50 PM
RTMM Waypoints ...

If you look at the Location Information Page on the "Here2There" web page ...

RTMM Location Table (https://return.mistymoorings.com/here_to_there/#info)

... you will see that ALL RTMM Locations, with their sublocations, are all now listed in alphabetical order. All of them have start co-ordinates and ALL of them now have their own ICAO code or WayPoint (R-Number).  Many locations previously were not included on the table. Also, the Alaska Power Project was not included. They are now all there. The table now has EVERYTHING we have on the scenery page. The only things still "missing" are the USFS cabins, and that will be the next part of this project.

The R-Number WayPoints ...

You can find the download folder these at the top of the RTMM Scenery Page, also, they are under "R" on the scenery page. Basically it is simply a folder that you put into your ADDON Scenery in your sim and activate. Once you do this, you will have a WayPoint for EVERY RTMM location and sub-location.  If you want to fly to a particular location, look it up on the Location Information Page, get the R-Number (waypoint), and put it into your GPS. When activated, it gives you a DIRECT route to the location .. not a route. There is a pdf in the folder that gives instructions on how to enter these into your GPS and how to use the waypoints.

This, in no way, replaces all of the almost one thousand RTMM/MFC Flight Plan Routes, all of that is intact. However, this will give you a "new" way to fly in the RTMM area that is a little tricky (and probably more realistic). In our area, the ceiling usually is low, around 2000 feet or less, obscuring the mountains. So to get from point A to point B, you must fly a maze between the mountains.  (If you go above them and lose sight of the water, you may come down INTO one!). The RTMM routes give you the turns to run the maze successfully. With the WayPoint system, you put in the waypoint and YOU have to figure out how to run the maze of mountains to reach your objective.  Also, you can now fly from location to location. Before, we always had to start from an airport. Now you can already be an RTMM location, decide to go to a new location, find the WayPoint number, put it in your GPS, and continue your journey to the next listed RTMM destination.

Also, on some days (darned few!) there are clear skies. No use in running the maze, when you can safely go up to about 4000 feet and go directly to a location. I have become very used to the routes, and I've seen most of them over and over. Flying "off the route," above and across the geography gives you a whole new perspective of RTMM.

If you are a novice flier, I would pass on this, it is easier and more safely used by the experienced pilots.  In the end, it is just "another" way to enjoy all of the locations that are hidden out in the RTMM maze waiting for your discovery. Basically, we are giving you a GPS that has every RTMM location already added for you.

I hope you enjoy the new program.

Doug

PS: If you like this kind of flying, making a desktop shortcut to the web page keeps it easy for you to quickly find the WayPoint number.

Norm put the table into a PDF so you can print it and keep it on your desk for reference. There are links to it on the HERE2THERE/ Location Information area and you can also download it from the RTMM Scenery Page.  (Attached to this post)

Hello, bonjour à tous
Thank you for this fantastic job ...
However, it is normal that there are duplicates in the list of BGLs.
good to you
see you soon

Thank you, those were in error and are now corrected. Once in a while, you also will find duplicates on the table for the same location (Totem Bight).  There are two Start Points there, but only a single GPS location is needed for the location.

If you see any more let me know.  I found a couple of other ones. All fixed. I'll get the new "printed" copy up tonight. I'm putting the USFS Cabins into them, so it is under construction.

Doug

UPDATE: The latest "Printed" (pdf) copy is ready. You will see some blank R Numbers, I am putting all of the details on the USFS cabins first, then I will come down through them and assign GPS slots.

Great huge job. I did notice the missing "R" s. However, "R361A" is not a "bgl" file but "xml".
Otherwise unless I don't saw others, everything is perfect.
Thank you for this work. We will have lots of fun.
SEE YOU

Keep your eyes open for these, doing them gives you kind of a "fuzzy" head after a while. :-)
I've corrected that one to "bgl".  Again, please keep watching, it is a great help for me.

If you click now on the "Refreshed Date" at the RTMM WayPoints scenery location (on the scenery page), it now has a maintenance log so you can see what changes were made.

Hi Doug
As I understand you, fortunately there are only 365 ;-)
At this time of May 29, my eyes saw no more duplicates or "false bgl". That's a good job.

...and the fun starts again tomorrow. I have 12 more USFS cabins to put in after supper, then they are all in the database. Tomorrow I’ll begin giving each of these new (about 150) locations an R number. You can see all of the cabins in there now if you go to the online Location Information table. (I will make a copy for print and download when I’m done, but not yet).

I’m finding these a lot of fun to fly...you really have to pay attention to altitude and you really have to be careful about setting up for the landing zone. It’s a lot of work, but I think many folks will enjoy this as “another way” to experience RTMM.

Title: Re: RTMM WayPoints Project
Post by: Doug on May 30, 2020, 07:43:31 PM
Thank you all.

I now have put in all the cabins and all the locations have an assigned waypoint or R number. You can see all of them on the Location Information table on the Here2There web page. Next, I have to proof all of them. I will be checking the lat/Lon/ and R number on the page against each xml I made,  making sure they all match.  It is easy to accidentally copy from the wrong line and paste it. If lat or long are wrong, you will be landing in the trees,  perhaps in Borneo!

The ones I have up in the web page are not yet double-checked, so be careful.  I'll be checking all if these as well as  the new ones I've made.  There are about 560 if them,  so this will take some time.

What I could use some helonin are these:

1. Are the package identifiers correct. For instance, is an item really located in PFJ or is it in Tongass X?
2. Most of the landing terrains are ok, but I bet there are one or two where I have “W” and it should be “L”
3. I need to figure out the pkg for each of the power plants.
4. You may see other errors, let me know and I will fix them.

When finished, I hope this table will be the roadmap for RTMM. So I’d like to get it as accurate as possible.

Once I’ve double-checked the lat/long data, I’ll post the whole thing for you.

Doug

UPDATE: I've "pulled" the zip file for this, there are just too many errors that I am finding in my cross checking. I'll keep you posted.  Be VERY careful with usage if you've downloaded.

Update 05.30.2020

I fixed all of the problems I found. Much work was actually done on the Location Information Table updating the waypoints from the 2019 update. Also, the locations from Vancouver Project were not on the table, those are now included. The Rtmm WayPoints.zip folder is now ready for download.

Let me know if you see any problems. If you downloaded before ... DELETE the folder you have first ... do not OVERWRITE! Names were changed and you could get duplicates.

The WayPoint program is now fully functional, a new zip button and readme button were put on the scenery page. A new waypoint R571A was added for "CIRP R and R Lodge" ... which is a part of Soule Glacier but needed its own waypoint. CIRP R & R was also added to the location table.

Winstanley was in as an xml, that was fixed to become a bgl.

There may be some small things here and there, let me know if you encounter a problem.

Works like a charm!

I assume it's intended that the waypoints are not visible on the map?

Vince ... got both xml's fixed. A new zip folder is posted, noted on RTMM WayPoints maintenance log. (Remember all, when replacing the RTMM WayPoints with a new one ...be SURE to delete the old one first. In this case, if you were overwriting, the old xml would remain in your folder.

Karl ... the only show on the map when it is your "added destination" into the GPS. As soon as you have it added as your "direct" waypoint from your GPS, then the "R" number will show on your GPS at the destination.

Trollers Cove Cabin had the wrong longitude ... fixed now. So the RTMM WayPoints needs a re-download and re-install (delete the old one first) ... see Maintenance Log.

For those of you following this, we will have corrections like this until everything is OK. So be checking the Maintenance Page and watch for a RED RTMM WayPoints there and note the date.

I'm flying from location to location using the new waypoints. As a flight planner, I'm using Little NavMap. When I select the next waypoint, I am able to "edit" that waypoint in LNM and put the R number in. It then shows up on the location name when Little NavMap is on. This is helping me keep track of the cabins I fly to and have "checked". Also when done, it may give me an "export" folks could use to have all of the locations "numbered" for waypoints. I'm actually flying "over" them, making sure they are where they should be, then I look at LNM for the next nearest location and put that one in and fly to it.  I'm finding an error here and there, but most seem to be ok.

Waypoints working nicely. Flying to the cabins north of Sitka, you can just go from one to another, don't even have to land. Good way to check out the accuracy of the waypoints, no changes needed today.

Still flying the WayPoints. Correcting as I go.  I'm also changing the "icon" for all of the RTMM entries to the little brown cabin (see pic). You can see also the "R" number for each one I have visited. I have to actually visit them all (which is fun), to make sure the waypoint is correct. You can see the dotted line flight route I took to "find" the waypoints.  I've cleaned out the many duplicates I had in Little NavMap ... seems every time you hit it with a CSV file, it "adds".  When finished, I'll have a CSV file for all of RTMM for Little NavMap that should be very accurate.

Just posted the latest update. There’s a new pdf for table and updated waypoints folder to download. This will take some time to get it all correct, but flying from cabin to cabin is fun. Sometimes I don’t land, just do a low pass to spot the cabin and make sure the waypoint was working. I’m cleaning up some little things along the way too, still some doubles in the database, occasional misspelling, even a cabin not on the table yet. I’ve found a couple of them. I usually leave the autopilot off, so I’m getting a lot more stick time.

I’m really impressed with Little NavMap. Still trying to figure out how the database has collected all the duplicate waypoints. I miss the “place aircraft at position” that Plan G had, but everything else looks great.

Still a great deal of work to do on the waypoints.  I'm coming down through the list alphabetically now (have finished "C"). Notice there is a new little green checkmark showing up beside the "R" waypoint number. That means it is "verified".  I wish I would have started this earlier, I've checked a couple of hundred.  I'm finding most of the waypoints are fine, but now and then I find one in error.

For anyone "playing" with this project, let me know if you fly a waypoint successfully and can verify that it is OK. I'll use your information to add the green checkmark.

I've now got a "pure" database for Little NavMap that has ONLY the locations on the location table (and I'm adding to them as I come down the list).

Let me know if you verify a waypoint.

UPDATE: RTMM WayPoint project ...

There are now 631 waypoints and more will come. We had left out The Western Chugach locations, Vancouver Island Project, and several other locations. They are now included. Each of the Starting Points on the Location Information Table (when verified), will put you EXACTLY where you should position your aircraft for a location. There is a pdf for the whole table (so far) that you can download. I do not recommend printing it right now. It is 26 pages long.  You might want to make a desktop shortcut to the RTMM Location Information Table. You can use this url:

https://return.mistymoorings.com/here_to_there/#info

For Windows, use CTRL F then type what you are looking for. I'm sure this will be the preferred method of using this information.

We will be using Little NavMap as the database tool for this project. Each RTMM location will have a user point in Little NavMap. Each user point will have a unique WayPoint "R" Number. The location name and the "R" number show up on the Little NavMap map. Putting the "R" number into your GPS will direct you to the location from anywhere. When finished, I'll be posting a Little NavMap userpoints CSV file for all of RTMM. You can add this ONE cvs file to Little NavMap and you will have all RTMM locations.

I am checking EACH entry to make sure the GPS waypoint is correct. This, of course, takes a lot of time. I am presently finished with A through C.  When a waypoint is "verified", you will see a green check to the right of the "R" number.

If you are interested in this project, you can download the "RTMM WayPoints.zip from the RTMM Scenery Page. Put it in like you add any scenery and you will have access to all 630+ GPS locations for RTMM. Also, if you are flying these and you can "verify" a particular waypoint, let me know so I can add a checkmark for it. Keep in mind, some of them could be incorrect.  I am checking these by putting in the start coordinates for a location, then once "there", I put the "R" number into the GPS, if there is no line leading away from the location, then the waypoint is good. If there is a GPS path leading away from the location, then there is an error.

RTMM WayPoint Project Completed!

You can see the completed LOCATION TABLE here (https://return.mistymoorings.com/here_to_there/#info).

The RTMM WayPoint Project is now complete. All RTMM Locations and USFS cabins are now in the database.

We are using Little NavMap and there is a downloadable CSV file at the Scenery Page location. All WayPoints are now added to the Little NavMap CSV file showing all RTMM locations with little "cabin" icons. There were 630 icons added and positioned correctly.

Over 40 new maps were created so if you click on a location name, you will get a map showing you where the location is situated in our RTMM area.

Over 40 locations were added, these were some that we had missing over the years. They are all there now.

630 RTMM WayPoints were individually created with xml and put into the "RTMM WayPoints.zip" file that is available on the Scenery Page.

All 630 RTMM WayPoints were VERIFIED. (I had to "position" myself at EACH location making sure the "R" number was correct. Also many ramp locations were adjusted so all of the starting points put you exactly where you need to be to start.

The RTMM WayPoints pdf is available for download. It may be handy to have, but it is 26 pages long, so not really the best use of paper!  It is better to use the "url shortcut" you'll find at the top of the Location Table (here to there page) and use (for Windows) CTRL-F to find the information you want.

The ReadMe has been updated to include Little NavMap information. including a link to the free program that has THE BEST documentation on how to use Little NavMap.

By having to go to EACH location to verify the R number and the starting point, I found several things that need to be fixed (those are in GREEN on the maintenance page) at some RTMM locations. These include Smoke Adjustments and a few Season Switcher files that should be updated. As I fix those things, you will see them eliminated as "fixed) on the Maintenance page (https://return.mistymoorings.com/maintenance/).

This program will blend nicely with the (almost ready) RTMM Installation package that installs all RTMM locations very quickly. Stay tuned!

If you turn "on" Obstacles, Mountains, Helipads, Lighthouses and Cabins, you should have everything you need. If something is missing, let me know. I think I got them all, this took 2 weeks work dawn to dusk, but I think it is overdue. Now we have it all in one place.  If you look at the map any FedEx terminal (all the same) you will see how I asked Little NavMap to select FedEx and it highlighted them by circling them. You can select waypoints you want in the "search" feature, then "show on map" and those waypoints will have circles around them. Nice for planning a little trip.

I look at the Little NavMap map, select an "area" I want to fly, then the nearest airport, and start selecting GPS locations from there, one to the other. I'm getting a lot more STICK time and much less AUTOPILOT time this way, you have to figure out the best way through the maze of mountains.

Really Helpful!!! Thank you. When you are exporting the csv data, there is a radio button that "if on" only exports the SELECTED files. I didn't see that, it is naturally "on" I guess. I turned it off and now all of the data points went out to the csv.   Actually, that's pretty cool. I can put other "items" into my own personal database here, then "select" for the RTMM data and only export that.  The little cabin would be the tag to search on ... and it works.

So let me know if this works for you. I also renamed the csv and zip to RTMM WayPoints CSV ... so we don't get it mixed up with RTMM Way Points.zip for the scenery library.

It is working perfectly here (of course), now I just have to get it working perfectly for you folks! :-) For me, it is a whole different way of flying. I'm used to the autoroutes and autopilot ... actually "flying" and figuring out how to get there is a LOT of fun and probably a far more realistic bush adventure.

Keep ideas/comments coming. This was a LOT of work and I really want it to be correct.

Doug

Autopilot up here in rugged bush country? Just can't do it.. no way!! Can't or realy should say don't want to use AP in these parts if you're actually flying and navigating the terrain!! AP might be fine if you're sleeping in a tube at FL360!!
Glad to see you have gotten some real stick time!! - is there any other way if you're flying low n slow bush?

There is also the csv spreadsheet files Dieter created and assembled for import right into Plan G (Dieter's Corner) mark most of the locations and poi for plan G.(Done a few years ago so a tad older and might be missing a few updated scenery locations but they work fine to show the locations).
Link: Dieter's Corner - https://return.mistymoorings.com/mistys/#dieter

Tim Arnott at Plan G still has to update the program to be able to be able to load all the nav data for the P3Dv5 database but if Dieter's csv files are imported in Plan G, the RTMM points (and many POI for various areas around the world) are reflected.

Hopefully your RTMM waypoints piece(s) will mark the RTMM POI in Little NAV map which has already been updated for compatibility with P3Dv5x.

Hello Doug
Action reaction  ;)
The file works PERFECTLY. Cabin points appear if I click on the "search" button and on the "User Point" tab.
It does not work on the PLAN G program, but the points appeared when I updated my database for FSX. If you check the ISEC box in the "map" tab, they are all there and you can do a search (in the "Home" tab) and select "intersection". BRAVO Doug and thank you for everything.
Title: Re: RTMM WayPoints Project
Post by: Doug on June 29, 2020, 09:43:08 AM
Thanks Vince, glad it is working for you!

I"m more of a scenery buff than a flying buff I guess, I like to let the plane do its thing and sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery. I'm a better passenger than a pilot at heart. So the new "stick time" is good for me and a nice change.

Dieter's waypoints work fine and the KMZ files we have are also excellent.

What I was trying to do with the RTMM WayPoints is to have EVERY location we use fully documented and identified. (Many were not). Not all locations had corresponding maps with them. All now do. Each of those lat/long entries for each location is PERFECT for a startup position. I've used the 4 digits (after the decimal point) to exactly place the sim's aircraft exactly where it should be, in many cases, it is right beside and lined up with the dock.  Then these very precise coordinates are what I am using for the RTMM WayPoints.  If you want to start at a cabin to fly to another cabin, using the lat/long for the starting cabin will put you exactly into the correct start position there. Then set the GPS on the next cabin and go find it. You don't have to leave or arrive at an airport with this system.

What is amazing about simming is that each person has his/her own niche way of using the sim. I was tired of flying MY SAME routes from Misty's Place out to some cabins. Many of the routes are nearly the same, going over the same water bodies. So it didn't take much "flying" effort. And if you are going to the Misty Fjords Monument area (Near New Eddystone Rock), you'll fly 90% the same route from Misty's to get to each of those several cabins in that area. Then you start over and fly it again to get to another cabin.  With the "R" Numbers, you can use the RTMM/MFC route to "get there", then you can buzz around the area with the "R" Numbers.

I always wanted us to have a "bible" for the locations. I've attempted it several times, but another big scenery addition would come along and we'd get sidetracked. But at last, it is all in one place.

I've got some "clean up" work to do next. When visiting each location, I'd always check around to make sure it was ok. In some cases, I found some things that need updating... I still found some misaligned smoke objects, etc. So I'll go after those and get them updated. (All this shows on the maintenance page)

Glad to hear this is working for people other than ME! :-)

You are a rare and precious pearl for users like us. your way of "flying" is the same for me. And I am happy to learn that I am not the only one who wants to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of our dear "toy". My French and Belgian friends from our VA "PRAETORIANS FS" Patrick, Jean Michel and Michel and a few others who also use RTMM, greatly appreciate your work and that of the RTMM team.
There is so much to do and visit that we do not have enough of a life to discover everything and when we take the time to read the explanations, it is a real pleasure.
I know some of my friends who "take off" in the morning from Paris or even Anchorage, set off "Georges" and come back in the evening after their work to "land" either in LA or Beijing ...... Those people don't understand not the RTMM philosophy. But I don't blame them, like those who put an AP in a J3 ..... don't laugh, I did it ...... As you say, we are all different in our same passion.
Long live RTMM and thank you again
See you soon and take good care of yourself

I'll post it Karl.  Just think,  I had to go to each one if those sites and make the data point on the map. Then make a little xml file for each one with correct lat/long and R number,  then check them all to make sure the R number was correct. That was a much bigger job than I envisioned when I had this hair-brained idea.  But it is so nice to finally have it completed abd checked.  Going back for the corrections today, I quickly got to the problems rather than getting close and wandering around a little to find them.  I think the best way to avoid such a task in the future is to cut back in hair-brained ideas! :-)

Thank you for the pic.

Thanks all.

I have now put all BWEP locations into the WayPoints program. I've made a new master map that will help folks find the locations. The location name on the Location Table is linked to this new map for the BWEP entries. The new data is posted. The new Master Map is below.
