Title: P3D v4.5 Water Animation or rather lack of.....
Post by: Garry on June 24, 2019, 08:41:59 AM
Hello
This is probably either a 'brain fart' or a classic senior moment [or maybe both] on my part but the water in P3D v4.5 should be animated shouldn't it?

I've recently installed REX EF and after playing around with Texture Direct and Sky Force I thought I had set them all up to work in harmony. When I launched P3D I thought there was something wrong and it took me a while to realise the water wasn't moving. Reflections are OK, craft move up and down as if on swells and wakes show but the water is 'frozen'.

I may be wrong thinking REX is to blame somehow, but is there something else that could be causing the water not to move?

Thanks
Josh

Yes was is animated if has wave effects/swells etc..
Check your rex or skyforce to make sure you water selection is not patterned. Then in P3D turn the water slider up to ultra... turn on some windy weather and watch for those waves. If your water is not moving then you broke it.  Or rex or skyforce broke the textures.. so remove or revert and try the water again..

You may have a conflict between rex and skyforce textures : they are almost the same product but weren't intended for use at the same time and from my understanding rex has old textures pre P3Dv4x whereas skyforce textures are supposed to be updated for use in P3Dv4x. I dunno.

Right away I'll tell you I find REX very confusing with all the duplication. So I don't really know what I'm doing.
My aim is to not to duplicate settings

Well it seems to me that REX EF uses cloud and sky textures from REX SF. So I have EF sync'd with SF.
In so doing I assume EF overrides all settings in SF?

The ground textures I hope are coming come from Rex 4 Texture Direct Enhanced. I only enabled runway textures and the like, no sound effects either.
I have wave animation enabled.
If it didn't provide these textures I  would have removed the program as it seems fit for nothing else these days.

I reset all textures to a pre-REX installation state using the respective program's built-in utility.

Still no good. Off to check my selections.

Josh

Hello

Well I uninstalled REX Tex Dir, SF and EF from P3D.

The result is that I have no water textures and the terrain is decidedly not correct either.. See pic.
I deleted terrain.cfg and have reinstalled REX SF only.

What is going on??

Wow, it sounds like some radical steps.  Maybe the weather programs aren't to blame. ???  You deleted your terrain.cfg?  Did you make a backup first?

I checked my waves ... 24 knot winds dialed up in the weather menu.

Hello

Hurrah!

All is well after deleting and rebuilding the appdata\local shaders folder .
Phew, for a nasty moment back there I thought more drastic action might be needed.

Jeff - Yes of course. I make regular backups of my 1Tb SSD drive that has most of my flightsim stuff on it, plus my 'archives'.
Thanks again for your time and help.

Josh

Jeff
A whole heap of embarrassment.  :-[ :-[ :-[
The problem was the wave setting in Environment Force. It was zero and needs to be higher [I've now set it to 0.18] to see wave animations!! What a clot I am. :-[ :-[ :-[

After I rebuilt the shaders folder I did not have EF open when I started P3D, so the wave animation returned, deceiving me into thinking it was the shaders and not that EF was not in control.

So sorry for wasting your time. :-[

Josh

Just wondering here if you have rolling waves with the water slider set to high.

Before Environment Force I always had the water slider set to high with very nice rolling waves and prefered this to the ultra setting. Now with Environment Force the water slider needs to be set to utlra to achive rolling water. The water does move the the water setting set to high but, it does not roll.

...Thoughts ?

I use EF in auto-mode

Here too Robert.. seems that only the ultra setting yields those bigger rolling waves and appears to be dependent on the weather. Should have bigger waves in more adverse weather (wind) and also seems to be varied depending on type of body of water.. ie: bigger waves in open ocean versus much smaller waves seen in smaller bodies of water with similar weather  ie: small lake or river.
Seems to work that way. But nice thing is that there seems to be no preformance loss on the ultra setting.

I Agree and very cool with no preformance loss on the ultra setting.  :)

Well, I was hoping to contribute, Robert, but at the moment I do not see water movement unless I have EF running. If I have the "Water Waves' setting in EF on any value up to the max of 60, all I see are 'ripples' and a heavy swell even in the P3D 'Major Thunderstorm'' setting. There's plenty of lightning, thunder, wind, rain and bobbing up and down but no waves.
I'm open to suggestions.....

I have contacted REX on this known issue and to my understanding it was to be fixed in update2 but, it obviously was not. I have not heard from REX as of yet. I contacted them a week ago...still hoping for the best.

Hi Robert
I didn't know this was a known issue. Thanks for that.

I have version 5.0.2019.0517 that REX EF tells me is the latest version, so I assume I have Update 2.
Is this the same version as yours?

Fingers crossed here that REX fixes this - and soon!

Kind regards
Garry

Yes, we both have the latest update of EF.

Tim gave a reply to my thread yesterday and said it´s being investigated which is very good to know...as you said: fingers crossed!

I can think its very complex with all the code and everytime you change a line of code it effects something else.  The people over at REX are talanted with all they have done to advance the hoppy that we all enjoy...my hat is off to them.

Robert

Agree. My buddy is a software engineer so I know all about one change leading to many more! I  remember he had to go to Boston from the UK one time on business to rewrite a program because some twit made a change in the code and neglected to realise the knock-on effect it had. Took him a week to sort out.

BTW-The one biggest thing I notice in EF for me is that I see much more mist now. Ketchikan Harbor was almost invisible the other day and the Dean River Run mountain scenery was superb with layers of mist halfway up. Is it the same for you? Just for that alone I'll cut REX some slack in respect of the wave issue.

Garry

Hi Garry,

I use Activesky together with Environment Force,Sky Force and PTA.  I could not be happier with the results... Atmospheric it is.

I have EF in auto mode which allows me simply to fly and not tweak. I understanding Tweaking textures is a thing in itself for simmers enjoyment.

Just a update here.

I just read in the REX forum that the water issue with rolling waves not working with the water slider set to high has been marked as fixed and will be in the next build of Environment Force... great news here.

Hi Robert - that's great news. I'll uncross my fingers when it happens!!
