Title: XPOI for the "tourists" among us ...
Post by: Doug on March 15, 2018, 09:20:29 PM
These tours Norm has created are absolutely beautiful and very relaxing.  We do fly in some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet at RTMM.  I'm finding that I'm enjoying XPOI by FSDreamteam as an adjunct to the Misty Flying Club tours. It is a payware addon.  It puts markers and names on many of the key features as you are flying. So if you were taking a real tour "up there" around Misty Fjords, the pilot would be pointing those out to you.  This is a great way to learn the area for VFR.  You can turn it on an off within the sim as you are flying, so when you come to an area that is a little cluttered, (like Ketchikan), you can turn it off. But when things get a little boring, its fun to turn it on and learn about the area. There is a feature that hooks you directly to Wikipedia if you want to know more about a particular site. You will notice the computer chug for a moment as they "come in" ... but once in, I'm seeing no depreciation of frame rates. (Click on the image to enlarge it).

Well thanks Doug.....I would have never thought that sightseeing software would ever adorn my computer, but this sounded fun, and hey what's another $19.00 LOL.  Loading it right now.  Sounds like this might give me the names of all those rocks.

Thanks

The trick to this is to get the right features showing and not clutter things up. Here are the settings I use for our area:

=====================================================

In Settings.......
...Enable Geonames POI's
...Distance about 2/3 to 3/4 on slider
...Enable Wikipedia POIs

In Facilities ....
...Enable Facilities Icons
...check using floating icons
...Check Towered airports
...check non-towered airports

In Hydrography.....
...Check show only these features
...Check all but springs and others

In Mountain, Hill, Rock, Sand .....
...Check Mountains
...Check Hills

In City, Village ....
...check major city
...check populated place

In Forest, Heath ....
... Check ..  show only these features
... check forest, reservoir, trees

In Spot Building, Farm ....
... Check show only these features
... Dam, ruined dam

(Remember, you already have airports checked so not needed here)

In Underwater ...
...check show only these features
...check show all features

(this will give you underwater reef positions, etc)

===================================================

If you check everything, it will be way too cluttered. It will give you the local historical society building, etc. For our kind of flying, we need more of the geography. Even with these checked, Ketchikan and the larger municipalities are pretty cluttered. What I like is being able to turn it on and off. When I'm approaching an airport, I turn it off, so the green "marker" isn't on the runway, etc. So you use it when you want to. Also the Wikipedia feature is pretty neat. You can learn a lot about an area by using this feature.
