You should see the videos he has of this stuff! Barb and I watch it every Sunday night after one of Dan's flying weekends. For the record, this is NOT something he learned from me! :-)

Here's my favorite jump so far, fun exit and some delta tracking:
-
Dan,
this is really awesome!!!!!
I for myself wouldn`t be brave enough and jumping out of a plane.....
How many jumps have you collected so far?
-
14 total so far. 3 tandems, then 11 (out of 18) for the training program. I need 25 to get my A-license.
It's really a lot of fun, and challenging. I love it. :)
-
Cool!!
-
Very neat! Assume that the "A" license lets you jump solo....just guessing....

Love it! Great form too. Skydiving will be a lot of fun.
Keep us up to date.

Yep. It's a 25-jump minimum to get the "A" License, in addition to passing tests and demonstrating maneuvers in the air. The last couple of jumps I'll actually be alone without my instructor most likely. I'm doing what's called the "Skydiver Training Program," which is a more involved training program than the typical 7-jump Advanced Freefall classes. I prefer the more in-depth course since it really drills in maneuvers and important safety procedures.
Once you have your license, you can officially jump solo at any USPA dropzone without an instructor or coach. It also bumps your allowed-time-between-jumps to 60 days (from 30).
After 50 jumps (and some tests/training/classes) you can get your "B" License which opens up crazy stuff like night jumps, jumping out of hot air balloons, and helicopter jumps. B bumps your currency requirement time out to 90 days.
Love it! Great form too. Skydiving will be a lot of fun.
Keep us up to date.
Thanks! LOTS of room for improvement on my basic freefall arch, but tracking felt great. Will keep ya updated. :)

Nice pic of the Twin Otter landing after the last load of the day this evening:

Beautiful picture, Dan!

I put together some shots of the Twin Otter that carries me up to my sky fun, sorry if the audio's off, I gave up on equalizing it.
-
Dan, how many times a day does that otter take people up? YouYube insert looks great.

It depends on how busy it is, how much daylight there is, and if the weather is cooperating. On a perfect day, the most I've seen so far was 8 or 9 loads I think. That should start increasing as we move towards summer.
-
Thanks for the new video, Dan!

So I was grounded from jumping this weekend due to weather and being in important ground-school stuff... I managed to make it up to the skies on the last flight Saturday. The clouds had broken just enough to let the more experienced skydivers jump, and I got to fly as observer in the copilot seat of our Otter.
It was awesome. I'm going to do it again and hopefully get video of the wing-over the pilot does after the jump-run is done, it was amazing. These guys treetop fly the landing, and that thing stops on a dime.. New life goal: pilot a Twin Otter (although I'll be happy with just having jumped out of one ;D )
Throttling up:

Exactly the amount of character I expected from this plane. I love it!

Skydivers in the back over my shoulder, usually I'm the one jumping out of this thing. This is odd!

You really have to adjust to look out over the console (as a newbie at least), now I know my TrackIR nonsense was correct!

The pilot lining up on his jump run, ready to throw some fun out the door:

Thanks for the pictures, Dan!
The last one shows a paper list and an iPad......old school and new era... ;)

Great pics, Dan! I especially like the custom grip work on the yoke ;D

Haha! The paper is the flight list I believe (at that point showing 10 loads/flights that day I think). His iPad mini setup is really awesome, it displays the "jump run" that he has calculated based off of wind speeds, load size, etc.. The jump run direction is something that every skydiver needs to know before getting on the plane, since it dictates how we'll fall/fly especially under canopy. Winds from the NW? Jump run will be from SE to NW, with us jumping NW of the landing area and using the winds to get back home.
It was really cool to see how the jump-run was depicted on that iPad (no idea what app he uses, I'll have to ask). There is SO much the pilot is doing at that point in the flight (trim, speed, ATC, visual scan for traffic, etc..). I have a huge appreciation for what those guys do, it's definitely not just "turning the green light on" and letting us go be crazy. ;D
-
Oh yeah, I camped out at the dropzone this weekend, here's my little yellow tent set up near the airstrip. ;D

Dan, simply great stuff here. You are one of those people who jump out of s perfectly good Otter.
The picture and videos quality is great.
I will be in Atlanta the 3rd week in June. I will keep my eyes peeled upward for falling bodies out of the sky.
-
Haha, FSRobert! There's no such thing as a perfectly good airplane.. PLUS, the door was open. ;D
You should head out to Skydive Spaceland Atlanta and get a tandem jump in while you're out here. It's life-changing :)
Thanks for the nice words, it's fun to share my journey in this crazy sport with you all.
-
Let us know how that jump goes, Robert. Uh-huh.
-
Passed my "A" checkout dive, I was able to pick my own dive flow this jump, so I went for a fun exit, and then delta tracking... I did my first gainer exit (pretty much using relative wind speed to backflip once out the door). The most fun I've had exiting so far. The rest of the jump was pretty sloppy due to me being so excited about actually successfully doing the gainer on my first try since it was more of a long-term goal of mine, but in the end I got a nice smooth tracking run to my deployment.
The video is taken from my instructor's perspective, then briefly switches to the other instructor in the plane, and then comes back to my freefall.
-
Congratulations!!!!
Great job.....you are the man!!
The video is really cool. Your backflip is great and looks amazing from the inside plane view.
-
Awesome! Congratulations!

Here is my A-License checkout jump (basically my final "test" in the air). Nothing too fancy, just basically a control-ability test. 7 more jumps and I'll be licensed!
- Diving exit
- 360 degree turns left/right
- Recover from instability
- Dock with instructor
- Track to deployment
-
8) Good job. :)

Amazing how in that Mantis position, all u do is tilt your hand for direction. I guess if you stick your hand out the window of a car at 60 mph, you can feel the force...you are doing about 120 mph?
-
Yeah, about 120mph in the neutral position (which is what that previous video was, notice the arms at a 90 degree angle). I didn't do mantis position until yesterday. Yeah, you dip your elbow to turn (one of the ways at least, there are lots of ways to do it).
This is mantis form (with added thumbs-up ;D ) from yesterday. Note the hands are held more in front of the face, and elbows are in front of the shoulders. Far from perfect form demonstrated below, but I'm still learning it. :) You can turn super-fast in this position, it's a lot of fun and I feel like I have tons more control in it.

I got my license! (they stamp your log book AND your forehead) ;D

Congrats Dan! Not an easy achievement!

Congratulations, Dan! Great pic with everyone pointing at you!

Leaving a perfectly "good" airplane to have your forehead stamped is rather unusual.
Great job Dan.

Congratulations, Dan!!!!!!!

They keep leaving the door open on these things....
Made my 50th jump today, earned my B-License. Good times! We're jumping out of a Caravan these days.

If we have to get a new IT guy we're not going to be real happy, Dan. You know that. Enjoy your free flights my man. Awesome.
