Title: Sea Legs
Post by: jeff3163 on September 12, 2015, 10:50:51 PM
Hello Misty boaters,
I've taken the HMS Bounty for a cruise.  I wanted to learn about this incredible model, and how to use it correctly.  A lengthy trip was in order.  I started out on the 9th of September from Roche Harbor.
I had just installed the AI World Shipping package, so I was anxious to see some large vessels along the way.  I've also heard that the HMS Bounty is also out there as an AI ship.  It would be so cool to see one of them.  I don't know where they sail at though.  I took some pics along the way from Roche Harbor to Tofino.

Ahoy Handie,
The trip is just begun.  I've made it out into open ocean, and a few miles up the coast.  My aim is to sail to Alaska, following the coastline north.  I will keep my eyes open for any white whales, Patrick.  I do have the Belem already.  It is not "wind-driven" though.   :'(

Nice pics!  They are especially stunning in 5040 X 1050!

Thanks, Rod.  ;)

ps-I've continued my journey northwest, halfway up the coast of Vancouver Island, towards Port Hardy and the Queen Charlottes.  I'm listening to sea shanties as I sail.  Now I just need some rum.   ;D

Jeff, do the ocean conditions just change as you change the weather...surface winds, etc?

Oh boy, do they ever!  In order to "drive the ship" you need to set the sim's wind speed and direction manually.  At 16 knots of wind speed, the ship cruises along at a leisurely pace of around 12 knots and the sea is relatively calm.  Increase to 24 knots to push the ship at a constant rate of 15 knots with full sails.  The sea is whipped up some, and waves grow around you.  At 36 knots, the waves are breaching the deck.  The ship is still travelling at 15 knots, but the top sails are furled to prevent breakage.  It is a wild ride, and the ship can be dwarfed by the onslaught of waves.  Well, I might be overdoing it a bit.  But it is very cool.  Pictures don't convey the feeling of immersion given by the tessellated water of P3D, combined with sound effects and a little imagination.

Swells in 24 knot winds.

Half sails in 36 knot winds.

OK, DL'ded  the Bounty, the update and the added camera views. Haven't tried it yet. My next question is do I need to install the AP and make the config changes for reverse thrust as discussed in "Pilotable Boats" and "Working on the Boats" in order to make this work properly?

                                   jsapair

(I assume AP is for autopilot.)  No, no, no!!!  This is a masted sailing ship, and is powered by the force of the wind, only!  (I did try using the AP on it, just for course heading.)

Autopilot on the HMS Bounty DOES NOT WORK!!!  Don't do it.

That being said, I did try some different wakes and bow spray effects on it.  Still looking for a good bow spray. ;)

Customize your sim's weather to make the wind speed and direction in the direction you wish to go.  I use 24 knot winds for full sails and top speed.  Set the cloud cover, precip., and time of day settings.  Then jump on deck and weigh anchor.  You must have some forward momentum to activate the "auto-skipper".  He handles the sail management.  You can also do the sails yourself, if you'd like.  To use the "tugboat" function, the sails must be stowed and anchor weighed.  I used the "pitch down" of my flight yoke (or the up-arrow key) to move the ship forward by tug at 4 knots.  Don't plan to travel anywhere using the tug.  Four knots is excruciatingly slow.  It is only for getting out of trouble, . . . or into port.  (which might get you back into trouble.)    :o

I looked up the use of the HMS Bounty replica in Pirates of the Caribbean, to find out which ship it was.  It was not the Black Pearl, as that was a much larger ship.  The ship portrayed by the HMS Bounty replica was the Edinburgh, which Elisabeth Swan stowed away on in Port Royal, to get to Tortuga.  It was eventually attacked and dragged down to Davy Jones locker by the Kraken.  All hands were lost, except for Will Turner.  Argh!

Progress report:  My ship is currently a few miles north of Prince Rupert, six hours to Ketchikan @15 knots.
