Title: Westwood Inn Alsek Announcement
Post by: Maloney on March 27, 2013, 01:36:52 PM
Gentlemen,

With SAK out now, i'm about to close a circle of nearly ten years of flightsimming in and around the Pacific Northwest. The Westwood Inn and its flying club originates at Bella Coola, moved for years to the Alsek River Dry Bay (Glacier Bay addon for FS9) and with the advent of FSX and Orbx PNW to the Klinaklini Valley.
Now we are reopening the original Westwood Inn again at the shores of the Alsek River

I know that you guys are about to draw claims in the area, so i hope that this particular airstrip is still available.

I've allready started on first sketches and imaginations, but the actual building and presenting of the scenery will take some time. The reason why, i'll tell ya: I'm going for the ral deal. For the two months of May and June you will find me travelling PNW, PFJ and SAK in a truck camper.  ;D
Maybe a first version of the Westwood Inn Alsek will appear in the next three weeks, but i'm finalizing it when i'm back end of June.

Cheers,

Urs,
sounds like a great trip to the north country I'm sure you will have a great time.  Westwood Inn back home sounds great.  No big hurry on it as you have earmarked the strip and its all yours.  Looking forward to your efforts when you get back home.

Hi Urs,

Great to hear your plan for Westwood....Brad is the keeper of the land (and shore area) claims for RTMM but I have not heard of anyone focusing on that area.   Brad...what say you?

Hi Urs, I'm planning to redo Rudy's strip (East Alsek River West). I did it for GB v2.

Urs:

Good news regarding Westwood's new venue!

Are you the talented fellow who's responsible for those absolutely marvelous textures for the RealAir ACA Scout?  Those paints are so perfect for our Misty environs that I fly with them most of the time.

And perhaps I can ask:  were any similar paints ever done for the Aerosoft Beaver?

Thanks again on both counts, Urs.

Rob de Vries: You made my day!

HighGround: Yes, i did some of the Scout, but not of the Beaver.

Wow! What a great message thread we have here today. Of course it's with much anticipation that we see the Old Westwood Inn back in the Alsek River area. Urs, would you please keep RTMM appraised of your development progress as you break ground and start hammering nails into boards! We will all be awaiting your progress reports. Question for you is will the current Westwood Inn South be dismantled? Or will it stay intact and remain there?

Rob, I also look forward to seeing your new airstrip and scenery in this area and hope you will let RTMM host your new creation for SAK! Please also keep us in mind when you can share your updates and we'd love to host your work at RTMM as well.

For both of you, RTMM is ready to assist you in any way you may need. Whether it's with help placing objects, or want some ground moved, etc. just let me know at my email and we can coordinate as you require. Again I hope you'll both allow RTMM to have the honor of hosting your work for these projects and any others you may plan on for the future.

Thanks again for making our hobby so much fun.

Brad, thanks very much for the help offered.

As for the Westwood Inn at the head of Knight Inlet, it will remain as it is. It is actually the home base for all of our club activiteis and remain unchanged.
However, the "new" Westwood Inn Alsek, as it will be named, will be the second base for the north country. I try to create it with some new buildings and new club mebers cabins.
I'm still putting ideas together. Simply to recreate it the way it was in FS9 is not possible due to altered ground layouts, therefore a new layout will be needed.
But first, i move to real PFJ and SAK until end of June and hopefully i'll come back with lots of ideas (and a hard disk load of textures ...).
The actual creation of the scenery will take place in July or August.

Cheers,

Hello,
Long time no see :) Resurrecting an older thread...

I'm reworking East Alsek River West - Rudy's Strip for FSX/P3D v2. Around 45NM from Yakutat.
Originally made for FS9's Glacier Bay v2. The new (unlisted) strip is based on the groundwork of FTX SAK. Some rework will be done on roads and rivers. I think I need some help with smoothing/blending the hard edges of the roads and polygons  ???

First screenshot's...

Google Earth picture of the real deal. NNE approach as in the in sim screenshot (FSX) above.

This is what I mean..
I made a polygon in SBuilderX 3.14 64bit. Used Google Earth as background to draw the poly. But as a  wannabee scenery designer I'm sure there's a lot I don't know and miss. In this case how on earth do I make these poly's (red in screenshot) blend better with the surrounding FTX SAK terrain (yellow in screenshot)

Thanks for any pointers. :)

RobdeVries,

Google "FSX Blend Mask".

But High Ground? Are you sure you have the right person in mind  ???

High Ground being Jon, AKA Throckmorton Throttelbottom. Sorry about the confusion.

RobdeVries,

Google "FSX Blend Mask".

Thanks ualani, but from what I understand is that a blend mask is meant to blend an custom (photo real) polygon into the existing scenery. In the pics above it shows vector elements (FTX SAK dirt road) which blends nicely into the FTX SAK existing scenery  versus my vector poly which has hard edges and doesn't blend well.

Hi Rob,

There is no integrated, easy blend function for vector polys.  Steve mentions photoreal because it can be used to create blended polys.   Just because it is called photoreal doesn't mean that the bit map image produced has to be a "photo" of the GE image.  Keep in mind that once it is a .bmp file (with accompanying location information)  a developer can repaint the image to look like anything the developer wants it to look like.   You definitely will need to be familiar with layers etc. using a paint program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro x5 or better.  The key is that the add map function of SBX lets you grab the photo from GE (a bounded poly with a photorealistic texture) and, most importantly, the location coordinates to place the photo.

In other words, that very same GE background that you created a vector poly on, can be grabbed as a map with the location coordinates using SBX and then the resulting .bmp file can be used as a canvas to create a custom textured image that can be blended using channel masks as input to the SDK Resampler.   The result could be a re-textured photo .bgl that looks just like your poly, except now the edges are blended.

It is complex, but can be learned.  The key is learning to do photoreal first.  And, along with photoreal comes autogen annotation since photoreal .bgls suppress all autogen.  Ed Wells (Falcon409) created a good set of tutorials on how to do photoreal.   They can be found at:

www.sim-outhouse.com

Look under:  Warbirds Library tab and then down to FSX Utilities section.  Look through the entries in the FSX utilities section for SBX Tutorials...first one starts on page 2 in the FSX Utilities Section.   There are 10 tutorials plus the final one.

You will have to register to be able to download.

Post by: Holger Sandmann on May 19, 2015, 01:18:05 PM
Hi guys,

Rod's solution is a feasible approach. Another one that I'm using is to soften the hard poly edges with a vector overlay. You can actually see that overlay vector in Rob's screenshot just to the right of the yellow circle; the vector texture stands out a bit next to the grass polygon to the left because its resolution is 7cm/px while the poly's ground texture is limited to 1m/px. Vectors can have Alpha channel blending and thus the edges are soft; in this case the airstrip's grass polygon is bounded by a grass vector with the same seasonal hues.

The main drawback of this approach is that these custom vectors require custom entries into terrain.cfg, which requires a reliable installer tool to achieve this on a user's PC. However, if this isn't an option perhaps one of the existing default road or shoreline vector is sufficiently similar to the polygon's texture to do the job.

FYI, in SBuilderX one can create a border vector for any polygon simply by right-clicking on the poly's edge and then selecting "Add Line".

Cheers, Holger

Hey Holger.

Thanks for mentioning the concept of using a shoreline or road vector if it happens to be a close match to the poly.   I have done that in the past.  However, I stay away from custom vectors because of the terrain.cfg problem.   It is too bad FSX/P3D was not designed to allow multiple terrain configs at the same time.

Though I may have misunderstood, I think Holger meant "Make Line" as opposed to "add line".

LOL  ;D

On another note. I'm trying to add sounds with the Rhumbaflappy method: Dick Ludowise (aka "Rhumbaflappy") posted an interesting example demonstrating how sound effects may be implemented without a controller-type file, instead just using a XML placement BGL with a "basic" sound *.FX file here: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19185&highlight=effect. (http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19185&highlight=effect.)

I used his example and his example worked. I edited the xml placement file to reflect a new location to place the sound but alas no sound showed up.

This is the xml file edited only for the new location:

Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

      lon="-138.427633345127"

I'm not at my FSX computer right now, so I'm flying blind here.

Don't know if this will matter a bit, but comparing your xml to the one at FSDeveloper you have alt="0.0M". The FSDeveloper example shows alt="0".

You obviously got no compile error??

And the example shows

<Effect effectName="sfx_Chickens" /> (without the effectparams="" added)
