Nice Aircraft Candidate for RTMM!
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:52:49 PM »
.
From the viewpoint of my Bush-oriented Flight-Simming, I made a significant discovery, the other day, and I thought perhaps someone else may find it of at least partial interest.  But lemme give a wee bit of background, first.

I’ve always been a big fan of the Aerosoft Beaver, and with Chris Brisland’s excellent MM paint, I’m happy with yon Beaver as my plane of choice for bogging around in Misty’s environs.  But it’s always nice to have an alternative aircraft.  Y’know – just for a change of pace, once in a while.  So I went looking for another amphibian that would pique my interest.

Well, I already had the sweet little Sibwings BirdDog, but when I tried to add some (all-important) pop-up panels of my own, they wouldn’t render, for some strange reason.

So I tried a few other candidates, here and there, but had no real luck.  Something was always missing from the package – some crucial element that contributed to the plane’s overall appeal.

So then, I just happened to stumble upon a thread in (I believe it was) the Orbx Forums, where someone was asking for opinions on the relative merits of the BirdDog and the RAS Scout.  Aha!

I hadn’t thought of the Scout, although I’d purchased it a couple of years ago, but for some reason I’d consigned it to my “Secondary Hangar”.  So I dredged it out of retirement and gave the amphibian a go.

Well, what a marvelous little aircraft it is!  Wonderful flying manners;  it handles like a dream, and has all of the features I like, with the minor exception of a grungy cockpit (like the gloriously grotty Sibwings BirdDog!).

And just to sweeten the deal, I discovered a Texture Pack for the plane at FlightSim.com.  The pack (http://www.flightsim.com/kdl.php?fid=113502) contains (among others) TEN lovely paints for the amphibian.  Each of them is a lovely bush-type paint that’s ideal for beebling-around MM’s nooks and crannies.  Some – especially the ones by Urs Burkhardt – have the appearance of having been actively beating around the bush for the past 15 years!  About half the paints have Canuck registrations, the remainder are Muriken.

I’ve rambled for too long, but I can only heartily recommend the RealAir ACA Scout for use in MM’s skies – especially with the mentioned Texture Pack from FlightSim. (http://www.realairsimulations.com/home.php?page=home)

Thanks Jon. Good stuff and I'm glad you're finding some other aircraft to explore our little piece of FSX.

I second your choice of planes Jon
 I recently bought both of these aircraft for flying around Mistys. But I do find that the Scout is a little underpowered.
  Being a bit of a lazy flyer I added a Auto pilot to the Bird Dog. this is now by far my favorite plane for crusing around this incredible enviroment.

Yeah, I forgot that point, Ian.

And I recall that I thought the same way, so I went to quite a bit of tedious tinkering so's to tune-up the little beast so it had a teensy bit more oomph, but not enough to "ruin" it.  Works just right for me, now.

ahh nice Jon
 Did you mess with the Aircraft cfg? I cannot find any way to beef her up.
  Also there is an old Misty repaint from the fs9 days still up on the net I downloaded this and converted it dds works just fine with the FSX Scout, looks okay.

PS figured it out at last increased the thrust_scalar to 1.2 more beef now 8)

Hi Pippin,
  Would you be so kind as to show me how to add the autopilot to the Bird Dog?

Thanks!

Here are a few from the ten-pack of paints for the Scout that I mentioned in an earlier post (above).  I really like the "grungy", well-used look of some of them.

Adding autopilot to any aircraft:

change in aircraft.cfg:

[autopilot]
autopilot_available=1

add to [autopilot]:
use_no_default_pitch=1
use_no_default_bank=1
default_pitch_mode=0
default_bank_mode=0

Now you can switch autopilot on/off by pressing "z"
[Ctrl]+z  for alt hold (American keyboard)
[Strg]+z  for alt hold (German keyboard)
also see  the assigned keys in your FSX for other settings.

If you want an extra panel it's additional work.

Rob and for all........
 not my work mind I got this from the sibwings forum but it works fine. :)

First made a copy of the original aircraft.cfg file under another name.
Then edit the aircraft.cfg file (with notepad for exemple) and search for [autopilot] section.
A the top of this section you will have
autopilot_available= 0
This value mean that the autopilot is not installed ine the BirdDog
Change it value for
autopilot_available= 1
Doing this autopilot is now available in your Bird Dog.

Now you wil need to include an autopilot in your panel. Go to the panel folder and save the original panel.cfg file under another name.
Look for [Window Titles] section and modify it for

[Window Titles]
Window00=Main Panel
Window01=GPS Panel
Window02=pilote_auto
Window03=HSI

After the [Window01] section add

[Window02]
BACKGROUND_COLOR=2,2,2
size_mm=156,48
position=8
visible=0
windowsize_ratio=1.000
window_size =0.25,0.15
ident=RADIO_STACK_PANEL
zorder=3

gauge00=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio AP, 0,0,156,48

[Window03]
BACKGROUND_COLOR=100,100,100
size_mm=100,100
position=6
visible=0
window_pos=0.010, 0.75
window_size =0.15, 0.20
ident=HSI

gauge00=Cessna!Heading_Indicator, 0,0,100,100

The heading indicator is necessary to use thhe HDG Hold mode. You will have a default Cessna 172 autopilot.
I hope that you are already familiar with the autopilot of the default Cessna 172.
Doing so the autopilot is now available in your Bird Dog.

Please note you need to alter the panel folder for the plane you use ie panel e

...[Stgr]+z  for alt hold...

That's [Ctrl]+z for those without any German language skills.  ;)
