Trouble with hearing FSX ATC voices
« on: September 13, 2011, 01:32:36 AM »
Hey all,
I can't for the life of me figure out why I can't hear ATC in FSX.  I've checked all my Sound options, both General and under Traffic and all seems well there.  I don't have any other issues with sounds and can use TeamSpeak3 with no problem, listen to music, hear my plane engines and environmental sounds etc.   Any ideas on what else I could check?

Thanks in advance
Rob

A silly question, but are your traffic sliders off?  Do you have planes flying around?

Good thought Jeff.  I do have traffic active (AI)   Airliners at 25%   GA at 48%
I see the in the ATC text window all the calls but don't hear any.   If I press a number, like say #5 to announce taxi to runway I don't hear ATC or the pilots voice, but my sound in general goes lower.   I have the sound sliders way past half way as far at engines, environment, etc,  pilot voice selected under Sounds.    Do you hear the ATC?   Should I turn off the text box to hear them?

Thanks

I fired up FSX after work, and loaded AI traffic.  Sliders at 100%.  Mine seems to be working, although I expected alot more traffic with all the sliders maxxed out.  I sat at Stewart airstrip for 30 minutes, and only one plane came.  I moved to KSEA.  I can hear the tower and the planes, as well as the ground channel.  I requested "Taxi to North Parking", and everything worked like it should.  I don't know why you wouldn't be able to hear "some" sounds, but all the others play.  Are you referring to the ATC window as the text box?  Of course, that would be open.

Yeah, the ATC box was open and that's the text box I was referring too.  The ATC sounds are the only ones I can't hear, go figure!   Thanks for  trying to help out Jeff.

check and make sure you have your FSX/Sound/ATC folder intact. There should be 2 files and a folder in there. One of the files should say something like USEnglishBig.gvp. Are those there?

Thanks guys.  I checked my ATC folder in FSX and the files are there.

Even tho I had checked and rechecked my sound settings in FSX until I was crazy, I went back, made a change and now the voices work.

Here's what I did in case anyone else encounters this problem:

Under the "Options/Settings/Sound menu I checke3d the "Windows Sound Device Voice" section and it had been on "Default Voice Device".   Changing this to "Speakers (High Definition Audio Device" did the trick.

Rob,
I'm glad to hear you got it working.  I have changed those settings several times, and they always change themselves back to default device.  I hate that.  I want my sounds coming from the speakers, and the ATC coming from my monitor speakers.  FSX won't save the settings though.  Stupid computer.  Thanks for posting the fix.
