Voo's heat shimmer
« on: August 12, 2017, 09:27:14 PM »
I posted this in Hovercontrol but thought I would ask here, also.  I installed Voo's heat shimmer into P3D v4 for my choppers and it seems to function ok but the shimmer is much less transparent in p3d and almost looks like smoke.  I see in the effect file that it utilizes is the texture fx_wake_2.bmp.  Anyone know if there is a way to adjust the effect so that it is more transparent?

Thanks,
LouP

I figured this out myself.  I simply went into the effect file and changed the transparency setting under the color start attribute in both sections of the particle attributes and made it 2 instead of 4.  It looks good but I might reduce it further reduce it to 1 and see how that looks.

I don't want to steer this thread elsewhere but I have tired to register at Hovercontrol several times without success.

Realize that this is also going to affect the way your other wakes (for ships) look.

It shouldn't as the change was used in the effect file itself, not the wake_2.bmp.

Hello LouP,
I don't know this heatshimmer file. What does it do when installed?

It adds the shimmer you see coming from the back of a turbine that is created by the heat of the exhaust.  I installed it in all of my helis and tied it to the beacon light as that should always on while the engine is running.

I realize that you changed the effect itself and not the bmp texture. That's why you should check to see if it changes ship wakes too. It probably will.

I don't understand, It is a completely different effect file from what the ships are using for their wakes.  I've since checked out the ships and see no difference from the ship wakes before.

Hi LouP,

A little confusion on my part as you never mentioned what specific effect file you changed.   Did you change a specific effect file that came with Voo's Heat Shimmer or something else? What was the name of it?

Can you get in touch with the Hovercontrol admins?  They could help you much better than we can.  ;)

Hi Rod,

The change I made was to the file named "voo_heat_shimmer_helo1.fx".  That shimmer effect has a downward effect to replicate the rotor wash on the heat shimmer.

Hi LouP,

Thanks for the clarification.  That change definitely will not affect ship wakes.
