Aeronca Champ On Sale 50% Off
« on: March 10, 2011, 01:06:54 PM »
Passing this info along...

For the Champ fans out there, CR1 Software released a nice Aeronca Champion package a while ago.
It includes a taildragger versions with tundra tires and skis, also a float version
(And short tail/long tail versions of each apparently).
This package is normally priced at $14.95 USD, a good bargain...

However...

For the next 7 Days, (Until St. Patrick's day) it is priced at $7.47 USD at PC Aviator:  ;)

(I'm on a tight budget, but I can't pass up a deal this good. Plus I like Champs.  ;D )

Well...

It flies nice.
Reminds me of the good times I had with 'Lilski's' Champ for FS9.
The VC is nice too.
Overall I like it.

But...

The graphics leave me puzzled.
No bump or spec mapping.
No shading on the textures.

I think $7.47 was fair.  ;)

This software offers  a rich variety of airplane versions for few money, but...

this is not freeware and therefore a comparison with similar software like A2A Piper Cub , FR Piper Super Cub or even the old Real Air Scout must be allowed.

- Aeronca Champ Gauges are great!   :)

But I do not understand why CR1-Software developers set wrong priorities in texturing:
- Thus the pilot figure is texturized with not less than 13 bitmaps of 5MB each(!), while the panel only got a simple texture of about 300x330 pixel on a 2048x2048 texture!   :o
(Where does the user look most of the time, when flying?)

- The pilot seat consists of a 2048x2048 pixel large piece leather texture.      :o
- The outer skin of the airframe is decently drawn however without any details and any shade. And bump mappings and specular effects also are missing.  :o

My personal resume:
This software is generally standard, but does not meets the requirements of the ambitious armchair pilot, who wants to buy an overall good package, even for a higher price.

Greetings
Dieter
Many greetings

Agree with Dieter. Got it yesterday and did two short flights The Tricycle model is all wrong. Too light and easy to tip over on taxiing. Way too easy.

The tail wheel model taxies normally and flies ok. The visuals are simple, especially the exterior.

Haven't flown the other variants yet.

Not bad for the discounted price for the number of variants you get, but not good enough when compared with other commercial planes in the same category. I've seen freeware with better textures and flight model.

The installer from PC Aviator is version 1.0.
The problem was noted with the tricycle gear one, and corrected .cfg and .air files are available here:

I agree, the gauges are very nicely done.
The VC doesn't bother me too much, I like it.
I tend to spend most of my flights in the 'office' anyway.
The flight dynamics seem okay, pretty stable.
I think it
ll make for some fun flights into short strips.

Just a shame the external graphics were never completed.  :o
