Well, for whale watching I am using these settings ...

I turned off the land animals and birds while boating.
My FPS was 19 with wildlife+ off, and around 9 with it on.  This is in 1920x1080 window mode.  I usually go fullscreen with a windowed resolution of 7680x1440.  Fullscreen usually cuts my FPS in half again, down to 10 before wildlife+ and 4 or 5 fps after turning it on.  It is still nice to see creatures in the sim though.

Sounds like my FPS with my old system.  Run with FPS locked at 30 now and see 29+ everywhere except very dense areas like KSEA. (No Animals running)
a cut of 53% in FPS seems a bit heavy to me.

Yep, I am concluding that this program is most useful for a specialized niche, like whale watching, or walking through the woods looking for animals.  Not to be used all the time, certainly.  Not for flying around, or touring the scenery.  It is very busy, with hundreds of animals produced in front of you constantly.  You can't choose the type of animals that spawn, or reduce the number spawned below 50.  While whale watching, I saw every type of whale there is, all together and leaping and breaching like crazy.  That's a bit too much.  A pod of Orca's, or a pair of blue whales or humpbacks maybe.  But not both, or all at the same time.  It's a nice idea that needs more work.  And it is a framerate killer, which is taboo in the flightsim community.
