Simulating Beaver tip tanks
« on: October 12, 2015, 07:06:02 PM »
 While reading around on the net I read that 30+% of Beavers and all military Beavers have tip tanks, not simulated.  The tanks look like an extension of the wing shaped just like the wing, rather than the cylindrical tear drop shape I was excepting.  Really like the Beaver and thinking of using it for long range cruising.

 Went looking into the Beaver file and found the Aircraft.cfg file with this:

[fuel]
Center =  0, 0, 0, 0, 0 //dummy to make fuel switch work
Center1 =  0.375, 0, -1.9, 35.0, 0.5 //35 USG @ +4.4"
Center2 = -1.633, 0, -1.9, 35.0, 0.5 //35 USG @ -19.6"
Center3 = -3.333, 0, -1.9, 25.0, 0.5 //25 USG @ -40.0"

The 35, 35 and 25 correspond to the gallons in the belly tanks.  Would it be likely to mess things up if I change them to 50, 50 and 35?  This avoids all the stuff way over my head messing with tank selectors and who knows what.

 Just wondering if anyone else has done this?

I don't see any reason why you couldn't try it.  It will add 30 gallons, making the plane a little heavier but still centered.  But the beaver is built for hauling.  If you don't like it, you can change it back easily.  ;)

That wouldn't be "simulating tip tanks" though.  for that you'd need to put 15 gallons on each wing.  No, I've never done it.  I get around fine with the stock fuel tanks.

Good idea but... do you need to fiddle with other FDE parameters from aircraft.cfg or to modify the .AIR file to compensate addition of extra weight? Just wondering...

Well, as I say, I've never done it.  But if I did, I would start by looking at a plane that does have tip tanks.  If the simulated fuel system is not too complicated, then copy/paste those into the beaver (if it proved to be possible.).  That is how I put amphibian wheels onto my floatplanes, or water rudders onto the Grumman Goose.  (or floats, water rudders, retracting wingtip pontoons, and lights onto my Ultra-lite trike.)   :o ;D

Tried it and it works fine, so far.  Guess I was being over cautious, just have found FSX to be a pit picky and didn't want to mess things up.

Regarding not being real tip tanks, if you look at a picture of a Beaver with tip tanks they are not at all noticeable - they look like extensions of the wing in shape and size, not tanks.  Also, I don't fly around looking at my wings.  All I really wanted was a bit more fuel and my solution works and only loads a realistic amount of fuel based on real world tip tank capacities.

Great.  Yes, just adding to the belly tank's capacity is the best solution.  By real tip tanks, I was referring to adding weight to the left and right wings, and having to balance them out or manage valves as the fuel was expended.  That's all.  Glad your solution is working for you. :)
