Ssd Clone
« on: August 16, 2015, 11:55:42 PM »
Has anyone cloned their Fsx or P3D drive using the Samsung Data Migration tool?  I would like to clone mine to a larger Ssd.

Is your FSX/P3D set up already on a separate drive than your OS is located on? I'm not familiar with the migration tool that you reference, but if it already is (on a separate drive) then you could just copy/paste the data from the old SSD drive to the new one and then make sure you change the new SSD drive's designation to the the same designation as the old SSD. (In other words, if your FSX/P3D was on drive X, then make sure that you designate the new SSD as drive X.) Hope this helps.

It is on a separate drive from my OS.  It just sounds way too easy for me.  I am hoping someone that has done this could tell me if their experience.

Do it just as I described and you'll be fine. No need to use 3rd. party tools.

So when you copy/paste all files over to new drive.  Did you have any problems with addons? Like Orbx?

Not as long as you make the new drive letter the same as the old one, as I said in my above post.

Ok let me get this straight.  Do you assign the drive letter after you copy and paste and remove the old ssd?

Your new SSD will have it's unique letter to start with.  After copy/paste is complete, change your original SSD drive letter to some other letter that has not been used.  Then change the new SSD drive to be the letter that the original was.  After that, you can remove the old drive.  Programs will now look on the new SSD for your sim, as it has the "address" of the old drive now.

The reason you must rename your original to something else is so that letter can be used for the new drive.  Get it?  ???

Just last week I cloned my C: drive to a new 1T SSD.  That was an adventure that lasted all day.  The cloning went smoothly, once I settled on a program to use (EaseUS Todo Backup Free) and learned how to do it.  But then I had to switch that drive with my operating system's C: drive somehow.  There was a problem copying the MBR over, so the new drive wouldn't boot up.  Argh!  More cloning and googling brought me to a successful completion.  I don't remember what I had to do to switch the drive letters over.  Oh, some switching in the BIOS was involved also.  I am glad I got it done though.  With one terrabyte, I shouldn't have to do that again for a while.   :D

So switching secondary drives should be a piece of cake, eh.   ;)

Ok Jeff would you recommend cloning my P: drive or copy paste?  Will I see issues with Orbx Ezdok or flight1 Gtn750?

I think the simpler method of just drag/drop from one to the other is much more efficient.  No need to mess with a program for what you're doing.  Keep it simple.   ;)

As long as your new drive is called P:, the same as the old one was, your shortcuts will work.  If something does give you an error, we can fix it.  (but it won't.)   ;)

You certainly can clone your P: drive to the new SSD if you want to.  I thought it was a pretty cool method, and easy to do.  But the copy/paste is just so much easier to do for your situation.   ;)

Alright Jeff I will copy/paste when I get my new Ssd in.  Just ordered it from Newegg. $159 for a Samsung 850 pro I thought was a good deal so I went for it.  Thanks again!

Isn't that what I said in the first place? Drag n' drop or copy/paste, change drive letter to the original after changing original to something else, and everything is same/same. Not rocket science or brain surgery. No problems with any programs you have. I've done this numerous times in upgrades.

If Jeff would have backed up his old drive by imaging it first, the cloning would have been totally painless without  the MBR issues he had. But that's a topic for another day. Maybe I'll write a tutorial about this some day if there's enough interest.

Ualani no offense I just like getting multiple opinions.  I just worry that I would screw up my P3D drive.  I am new here at RTMM and I really like it.  I want as little downtime as possible with this. I really appreciate your input and had already pretty much decided that I was going to do the copy/paste route.
