Going from 2.2 to 2.4
« on: October 16, 2014, 08:59:40 AM »
I've been sitting with v2.2 for a while now and waiting for the 'Dust' to settle on L.M. updates.

From all that I've read, It looks like 2.4 is good to go and I think it's time to move up a 'Notch'

I'm leaning towards a clean install of 2.4 rather than "patching".... and was wondering if anyone has any P2D 'Uninstall Tips' to share before I 'Rip-The Guts' out of all my RTMM + 3rd party add-ons ::)

According to the LM Forums this appears to be the way to do it:

run the 2.2 setup.exe and choose 'uninstall

FAQ:
manually delete the following folders for v2:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2 (or the modified install location)
%PROGRAMDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2
%APPDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Prepar3D v2 Files
then use a registry cleaner, that should do it.
After those folders are removed, you can reinstall Prepar3D and everything should work as expected.

As always... your shared wisdom is appreciated !

I did the patch from 2.3 to 2.4 and all's working so far. I do have some issues with P3D with graphics anomalies like effects not showing when coming into a new scenery that should display things like smoke from a chimney. And water showing on ground tiles near water bodies. But those issues seem to be LM updates and not glitches I can do anything about right now.

On second thought...

My v2.2 is running just fine, so I'm going with the Philosophy that... "If It Isn't Broken... Don't Fix It"... and I think I'll wait until the next Full Update to 'rip' all my P3D add-ons apart + re-install them.

Im using 2.3 ... feel the same way. Everything is working and I don't see a whole lot of "change" for what I would use with 2.4. I've already fixed the clouds, so I'll wait too.

I'd just like to say that I have upgraded through each iteration so far.  I have not needed to "reinstall" anything.  I backed up my current scenery.cfg and other vital program info before running the full install right over the top of my existing program.  I put my saved cfg and other files back in place, and am done.  Everything works just fine.  Reinstalling everything is not necessary.   ;)

Did I read that right ?

You guys just ran the "Full Install" download right over top of your previous version without uninstalling it first ?

I didn't see that option anywhere.    I was under the impression you could only apply the "Patch" download to a previous version... and...  if you wanted to use the "Full Install" update (as LM recommends), that you have to uninstall the older versions first.

Seems I am the only one who re-installs 100% with a P3D update and have done it since the beginning of V2...I guess I am special.  :P

Installing Orbx regions and even FTX Global only takes a few clicks of the mouse and the waiting for the programs to install, it all done within an hour. I have all my RTMM sceneries saved and simply copy them into P3D and activate them...again does not take long. Installing aircrafts and repaints is another story but somehow with a beer it all is relaxing.  8)

Robert,
With nearly 200 separate downloads of RTMM locations it will take more than a beer to 'git r' dun' if your re-activating them one at a time.  ('course that's what the beer is for right!   ;D)

For RTMM
i make a folder  RTMM / Scenery with all .bgl
                                 /Texture  with all textures
+ sound folder and + effects folder
one with Librairies
and it's easy to place by copy/paste

And only "3 clicks" all is intalled , copy them into P3D ADDON Sceneries and activate them easly.

ah yes the old everything in one folder method.  Of course it works but good luck if you have to find a particular .bgl or .dds file if you have a problem as you will have hundreds of them all bunched together.  Support would be hard to obtain for a non-standard installation as well.

There's a very straightforward way to figure which textures  go with their corresponding bgls using MCX in case of disaster.

Not familiar with MCX?? but finding which object goes with what texture isn't what I was speaking of.  Support is normally based on the recommended RTMM installation and asking the team to help with a possible self imposed problem due to improper installation is really stretching good will IMHO.

MCX = Model Converter X. Helps you "if you have to find a particular .bgl or .dds file if you have a problem..." Used in conjunction with IS and it makes such tasks straightforward.
