NOTAMs and NEWs Comments Thread
« on: March 27, 2014, 10:13:25 AM »
We are giving a "push notification" to our NOTAMs and NEWs.  We will continue to keep the NOTAMs page operative, but will put a duplicate posting here in this new NOTAMs and NEWs section so alerts will be sent out to the membership when NEWs happens.

The NOTAMs and NEWs sticky is "closed" ... so only news will be there, but you can comment on the NOTAMs and NEWs in this thread.

Doug,
as per your email request, I checked, the NOTAMS and  NEWS forum is locked and I cannot post in it.  The comments thread is postable as you can see with this post.

Thank you Spud.  So we can use this are for people to comment on the news.  As you pointed out, I hope they "refer to" the news topic so we will know what they are discussing.

Thanks to the RTMM team for one heck of a job on this MAJOR project. RTMM is now good to go for FSX, FSXDX10 and Prepar3D ... we are as up to date as you can get right now.  Much appreciated.  A special hat tip to Rod ... amazing work!!! And thanks to Steve for the conversions and Robert for the videos. And of course thanks to the gang that waded through the errors and fixes with the beta's ...

Doug,
You forgot to include yourself in the above. We all know that you put in hours and hours on this project while investing your blood, sweat and tears. Thanks from all of us! What an effort. Without you, none of this would be possible.

Whoa!!  Herring Bay Diner is not ready.   :o  How do I stop the wheels of progress!  More adjustments are needed.  (or just wear hip waders to dinner)   ;D

My shoreline must be different than yours? This is P3Dv2.2  ???

. . . and in FSX DX9,

EDIT:  The coastline difference was due to my installation of the payware PAKT airport which includes the city of Ketchikan and the surrounding area.  Neither Spud nor Doug have that scenery installed.  That's all.

OK, progress "halted" on the Diner.  Everything is looking ok for us (Spud and I) in FSX and P3D ... nothing out of the ordinary, pictures are matching up, etc. Let's take this back to the addon scenery area.

Josephine Lake location is found where?  I can find the plan, map etc. but no download location.  FWIW at the present time the USFS site is down and unavailable 2315 CDT 9/10/14.

Excellent Question, the answer will be good for everyone.  This is one of the USFS cabins. "USFS" is the key. If you go to the USFS Cabins page (Misty's Place top buttons), when the pages comes up do a CTRL-F (Windows) and  enter Josephine ... you will find the Josephine Lake USFS Cabin. It is in the Thorne Bay District table. Now look to the right at the GREEN letter ... you will see it is a "P" ... that means (from the legend at the top of the page) that it comes from ORBX PFJ ... built into the software, so if you have PFJ, there is no location to download and add.

The cabin object actually comes from FTX_PFJ-objects-cabins_USFS.bgl

This brings up another point. There are some MISSING USFS cabins (this is not one of them). So for anyone working with the cabins, it is always a good idea to download the Missing Cabins.zip file at the top of the page for the Cabins. It is a quick download. When it is installed, you will have EVERY USFS cabin listed by the United States Forest Service.  The Missing cabins have a green "R" to the right of the title. Look in the top cabin table Admiralty National Monument and look at Big Shaheen (2nd one in the list). You will see the green "R" to the right. That means RTMM put in that cabin and it is not one that comes with the ORBX software, it comes in the "Missing Cabins.zip" file.

For the NewComers to RTMM, this is an example of the depth we have gone to for accuracy on the Cabins. Most people have no idea about the legend on the page or what those things mean. So this is a great "teaching" moment for folks flying to the cabins.  And don't forget, every cabin has a To/From flight plan that is now included in the RTMM Flight Plans.zip file. (Here2There Page).

The Real World: The only way to get to many of these [real] cabins is by float plane. The "real" pilots up there are ferrying people back and forth from an airport or SPB to the cabins. People rent them and stay only a week or so. So PAKT harbor buzzes like a beehive during the summer with the many float planes taking people from Ketchikan out to the cabins and then bringing them back. With their blinking landing lights (for safety), the in-out patterns remind you of a busy commercial airport. Sitting on the deck of a  cruise ship in the harbor watching, you'll see sometimes 5 or 6 planes in the pattern for landing and taking off ... very busy!  For the Virtual Airlines pilots ... the "cargo" on these flights is PEOPLE and their supplies. These are flights that are actually happening up there every day in the summer. And, if you think about it, the flights go in nearly any weather. A person is staying at a cabin and is due to come back next Wednesday, the cabin is booked by a new person that Wednesday. Two parties are depending on the flight happening ... so they fly low and slow under the weather and make it happen.  That's why it is always interesting to check the Misty's Place weather cams ... if the planes are lined up at the dock ... then don't even think about flying. But as bad as the weather is, during the day, they are not there ... they are out working IN the bad weather.

The Cabins make RTMM as real as it can get. Those flights are real, the cabins are real (clicking on the name of the cabin on the Cabins page takes you to that cabin's USFS site so you can see what the real one looks like). Another detail many don't realize is built into the Cabins page.

Heck of a long answer, but again, a great "training moment," and a great question that needs an in depth answer for the many new people we have coming on board.  Thank you Spud.

PS: The whole internet was "flaky" last night. I was having problems uploading to the server, for some reason, Time Warner's internet service completely stopped during the President's speech! It looks better this morning, but the whole internet in the US had a bad evening. Sorry about the disruption, but I'm betting it was more than just our server.

Just a thought on the active (working) wind sock at Wilson River Lodge and future locations.  Rather than announcing individual locations one at a time perhaps we could have a thread that updates which locations have working wind socks added after about 5 or 6 socks are changed.  That way less work posting here and the user can grab several updates at a time.

Yes, that's a good idea.  I'll be working on all of the "PF" airports first from our ICAO list on the FAQ page. So when we get about 10 of them done, then I'll put up a notam with the list. There will only be about 3 such notifications.  As stated in the NOTAM, some people won't care about a windsock, so no need to re-download since nothing else has changed. New folks will get it automatically... and those that "care" can re-download.
