The Joys of DX-10 - Big Falls Hydro
« on: June 30, 2013, 02:15:20 PM »
As you can see from other threads, I'm trying to make many of our locations "DX-10 Friendly." Most of the time it is not too difficult ... replacing a picnic table or an outhouse with a similar object. Once in awhile an A-Frame cabin is not there (See Faq on DX-10) ...and some have all objects showing. Then you come to one where we've put in a lot of objects from library that does not show the object in DX-10. I use "Rock 9" from Woody's Object Library ... it is invisible in DX-10.  No big problem ... until you hit Big Falls Hydro ... ouch! The rocks are there but you can see right through them ... so nothing but "naked" water.  It took 3 hours to fix this one to be visible to both FSX with and without DX-10.   You will see the result below.  I'm going to eventually have to do all of the river runs and other waterfalls where we have put this object into the scenery.  It is great to be retired!

Thanks to Doug for experimenting with DX10.  My setup is now smooth and stable and I don't relish messing it up with graphics tweaks that I don't understand yet.  I'll let the brave venture forth for now!    ;D

I copied this response to the Dx-10 discussion thread. Please comment there since I've taken us off topic here.

--------------

Systems are different Rob, so yours can act dif from mine. But go to the FAQ page and download my log. Those are the only changes I've made. I have an NVIDIA video card and tried some things with it and lost my frame rates. So I did a restore in the card...more I have to learn there.  Also, you can always uncheck DirectX Preview on to off, the you are back where you were.  I switch back and forth all the time to find the missing objects.

You have to have your water setting above 50% to see the waves.  Just save your FSX.cfg so you can throw up your hands in disgust and go back if necessary :-)

Let us know the results.

One thing I've noticed, at dusk and night some of the AI aircraft textures go to blank white. Also, the big building at Big Hydro turns white at night. These are some if the screwy "shader things" that might be fixes with a new program that is in beta right now.

There are some differences...as we see them, Communicate it on the DX-10 Discussion thread under troubleshooting. And I will say this again, it isn't for everybody...but it is simple enough to try. We don't fly at night much, so losing those textures is not a big deal. But it us smoother, the water is beautiful and the frame rates...for me, doubled with what I've done.

And another thing for anyone running it...please let us know if you find an object that doesn't work. We can always replace them with one that does from the object libraries we ALREADY have.

Sigh....I know I'm going to tinker with it.  Resistance is futile!   I'll do some backups first and see how it looks/acts.   I have a Radeon card but I know there's info on that as well.

Jumping in feet first,
Rob
