Owikeno Lake
« on: March 27, 2012, 08:41:52 AM »
Just to the south of PFJ (in PNW) there is a lake area called Owikeno Lake. You'll find a SBP there in the PNW scenery. Well, if you wonder what I've been doing the past two month, it's time to let you know. I'm working on a new Owikeno Lake Scenery package. Basically there is a large dog-legged lake .. around it beautiful mountains and of course it is all "water-linked" to PFJ and RTMM just to the north. Brad had done 2 little airstrips in this area some time ago and I used his 2 to start the project, then added another airstrip, a casino, waterfalls, high mountain cabins, Brad's BBQ's and 4 major "river runs" where the rivers are all "river-scaped" for your boating pleasure. This area, hopefully, will make everybody happy. The heli folks are going to have a ball because I've got helipads at all these remote locations. The boaters have the lake and the river runs which are really stunning in this area and the pilots will have some tricky flying to find the little lakes upon which to land at the cabins and some nice "mail and supply runs" to the various locations.  There are 16 "locations" in this package.  We'll be doing some final beta testing, and there are a few details to work out and we'll be ready soon.  Here are some screenshots of the various areas.

(Thanks to Xavier, Rod and Holger, I finally learned to speak "polygon" and have been able to "flatten" many of the problem areas of the rivers ... leaving some so YOU could have a problem or two).

Well we are down to crossing the "T's" and dotting the "I's" on this one. Probably will launch it later in the week or this weekend.  There are 32 locations that will give folks plenty to do around that area. At all times, we kept in mind all FOUR aspects ... 1. planes, 2. helicopters, 3. boats, and 4. Enjoying getting "from here to there". We've got "real" waterfalls, 4 river-scaped rivers, two are 40 miles plus long, two are shorter for the beginners. Over 20 "hydro polygon flattens" were engineered into the package to take care of the major water anomalies.  This is a lot of work you will NEVER SEE (if we did it right), but it makes all of the river-scaped runs navigable.

Probably the most amazing feature in this package is the new Pacific Fjords Gateway Canal.  This scenery location is just outside PFJ (NOTAM: so you will also need ORBX PNW). However Rod Jackson has helped us make the connection. He has "dug" a man-made canal (like the Panama Canal) linking Owikeno Lake to PFJ in the north using several smaller lakes between. This is an amazing feat and "shooting the canal" can be a lot of fun. It is all river-scaped, so a beautiful "ride."  Here's what Owikeno Lake is looking like as we draw near:

Thanks for the kind words, Doug.   It was a lot of "fun" building the canal.  I, personally,  think the most impressive feature of Owikeno Lake is the sheer number of locations to visit.  Whether by Plane, Helicopter or Boat this is a scenery area not to be missed.

See below for a picture I snapped whle finishing an August flight up the Machmel River as I reached the head of the river.  You can see the Monastery towards the top end of the picture sitting below the very nicely shadowed glacier.

Doug has done a tremendous job with this scenery and you will all be able to enjoy it for yourself very soon.

Looking really, really good!
"
