Title: SIRP SCENERY ELEVATION PROBLEM
Post by: BBQSteve on July 06, 2018, 08:37:56 AM
While doing the MFC tours in 15 I have discovered elevation problems with almost all SRC locations. They all seem to be in a hole in my P3DV4 sim. I use Pilots Ultimate Mesh along with ORBX regions and global mesh. This has made it impossible to land at them so I land as close as possible to the airports. Anyone else experiencing this? Sure ruins some nice scenery.

It's been discussed several times in the past that Pilots Ultimate Mesh is incompatible with RTMM scenery. Thus your problems with it ruining your scenery (which wasn't designed to use PUM.)

Yes, it is the Ultimate Mesh, but here is what I don't understand. The world has not undergone any major upheaval in a million or so years. Mt. St. Helen was the last major volcano that obliterated a mountain, but other than that, nothing. So why the major (50-100 ft.) changes in mesh elevation?

To the lay person in scenery design, it would seem that if you put an airport in and the elevation is given at 50ft, it should be 50 ft at that spot. I know it must be more complicated, but it shouldn't.

Thanks for the info. Are we better off with no mesh at all?

It's because that different mesh products were made using different mesh resolutions. Therefore the elevation accuracy from one product to another, (or precise location for that matter, as in the BWEP pipeline issues.) It's kinda like viewing a 2 megapixel image vs a 20 megapixel camera image. One image captures more detail than the other. Just guessing, but the ultimate is probably more precise resolution wise, but it wasn't used for RTMM (or ORBX based products, to my knowledge.) Best bet is to disable PUM when in ORBX regions and live with it. Look at the terrain resolution differences in plain vanilla FSX or P3D vs the same place in an ORBX region; night and day. Hope that makes sense. There's lots of info out there if you Google it.

If you have the Pilot's Global 2010 version, it is compatible with Orbx and RTMM.  I use that one for North America.
I also have the Ultimate edition, and it is a shame to not be able to use it.  It costs alot.  Anyway, I use that for the rest of the world.  (unless I see an issue with it, then I'll switch to 2010 globally.)   ;)

Yeah, I have both also. It is a shame at the cost not to use it. Do you have both installed i P3Dv4 and only turn on what you need?

Thanks for the info Steve.

I am following this with some interest.  I thought Global Pilots 2010 was not compatible with P3Dv4x.  I am using the Global 2018 which I understood to be the follow on for the 2010 version.  Is it also not compatible with the RTMM scenery.  I also had problems with MFC0015 in that all fields were in a bowl.  Made for some very dicey landings coming in over snow banks.  Should I also disable the 2018 mesh for the Alaska area.

 8) OrbX, OzX, and RTMM are all designed using Pilots FTX 2010. It is perfectly compatible with P3D4. Pilot's 2018 will cause problems with all 3, and is not recommended by OrbX. Use 2010 if you have it.

Yes, ... what she said.  The Next Gen mesh is not compatible with our scenery.  I am flying around right now in CIRP, and all is good with 2010 North America active.  I've yet to go see the world, will do that now.  I've got NG active everywhere else except NA.  Tootles   :o :P ;D

I will have to see if I still have it.  May be able to redownload it if I don't
